Technical Writer

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Technical Writer to support the development of a comprehensive Groundside Transportation Playbook for a major airport environment.

The successful candidate will work closely with operational teams and subject matter experts to develop, organize, and enhance standard operating procedures, scenario-based documentation, diagrams, and other supporting materials. The role requires someone who can independently gather information from operational experts, translate complex processes into clear and practical documentation, and produce materials that can be easily maintained and updated by the organization.

This is an approximately 3-month contract engagement , with an anticipated start in September 2026 and a commitment of approximately 40 hours per week .

Key Responsibilities

- Develop and maintain a comprehensive Groundside Transportation Playbook based on an established table of contents and existing source materials.
- Develop, revise, and standardize approximately 12–15 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) covering various operational scenarios.
- Document procedures and response processes for scenarios such as traffic congestion, lane closures, transportation disruptions, and other groundside operational challenges.
- Develop documentation that clearly identifies processes for communicating and coordinating with key stakeholders, including Airport Operations and Security.
- Conduct interviews, workshops, observation sessions, and shadowing with subject matter experts and operational staff to understand current processes and procedures.
- Translate SME knowledge and operational practices into clear, concise, user-friendly documentation.




- Review and improve existing SOPs that may require restructuring, clarification, or rewriting.
- Develop and/or update approximately 10 operational diagrams , ensuring they are editable and maintainable where possible.
- Apply established organizational documentation standards and templates.
- Recommend improvements to documentation structure, formatting, usability, and overall technical writing practices where appropriate.
- Ensure documentation is designed with mobile usability in mind, as materials may be accessed through an organizational mobile application.
- Incorporate feedback from stakeholders and manage iterative review cycles.
- Maintain documentation in editable formats to support ongoing organizational maintenance and sustainability.
- Work independently between stakeholder sessions while maintaining regular communication with project stakeholders.
- Support the development of materials that can also be used for onboarding and training purposes.

Deliverables The engagement is expected to include:

- Approximately 100–120 pages of playbook content, excluding supporting SOPs as applicable.
- Approximately 12–15 SOPs , generally 2–3 pages each.
- Approximately 10 diagrams/visual representations .
- Scenario-based documentation / scenario cards.
- Supporting process and stakeholder communication documentation.




- Editable source documentation suitable for ongoing maintenance.

Required Qualifications & Experience

- 5+ years of professional Technical Writing experience or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing SOPs, procedures, process documentation, manuals, playbooks, or operational documentation .
- Solid experience conducting interviews and working directly with subject matter experts to gather and validate information.
- Ability to take complex or verbally communicated processes and translate them into clear, concise, and practical documentation.
- Strong editing, writing, organization, and document-structuring skills.
- Experience working with established documentation standards, templates, and style guidelines.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple documentation deliverables and review cycles.
- Experience creating or working with diagrams, process flows, maps, or other visual documentation.
- Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to produce documentation in editable, sustainable formats .

- Experience working in transportation, aviation, airport operations, logistics, infrastructure, or another operational environment .
- Experience developing documentation for frontline or operational teams.
- Experience developing onboarding or training materials.
- Experience designing documentation for mobile or digital consumption .
- Familiarity with modern AI-assisted documentation, transcription, or content development tools.
- Experience working in environments with multiple operational stakeholders and subject matter experts.
