We are currently seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join our Buildings team in Grande Prairie. In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of mechanical systems for a wide variety of building projects across Northern Alberta - with a particular emphasis on healthcare and mission-critical facilities, where system reliability, code compliance, and occupant safety are paramount.
Our regional portfolio includes acute care hospitals, continuing care and community health centres, correctional facilities, and other essential public infrastructure. You will work closely with engineers, technologists,
and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while supporting the continued growth of CIMA+'s local presence in the region.
This role offers a balance of technical design, project coordination, and hands-on field engagement - including site visits, commissioning, and construction support for projects throughout Northern Alberta. You will take part in our hybrid work model that includes flexible work hours, working from home and in our Grande Prairie, AB office.
Primary Responsibilities:
Core building mechanical systems
Design and develop mechanical systems for buildings, including HVAC, hydronic heating and cooling, plumbing and domestic water, steam and humidification, fire protection, and building automation and controls (DDC)
Perform heating and cooling load calculations, energy modelling, and equipment selection using industry-standard software (e.g., Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP)
Prepare mechanical designs, drawings, models, and specifications using Revit (MEP) and AutoCAD
Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, electrical, and structural disciplines, identifying and resolving spatial and system conflicts early
Healthcare and mission-critical systems
Design healthcare HVAC systems in accordance with CSA Z317.2 and ASHRAE 170, including pressure relationships, air change rates, filtration, and airborne isolation / protective environment rooms
Design medical gas and vacuum systems to CSA Z7396.1
Design healthcare plumbing and specialized water systems to CSA Z317.1, with attention to water safety and Legionella mitigation
Support sterile processing and medical device reprocessing (MDR) infrastructure, including clean steam, humidification, and associated mechanical services
Emergency power support systems (mechanical)
Design mechanical systems supporting emergency and standby generators, including diesel fuel storage, bulk and day tanks, fuel oil piping, and fuel transfer and polishing systems
Design natural gas supply and piping to generators and other equipment, and evaluate fuel source options (natural gas vs. diesel) on reliability, code, environmental, and operational trade-offs
Design generator room ventilation, combustion air, exhaust and silencer systems, and heat rejection to maintain reliable operation of essential electrical systems
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, including CSA B139, CSA B149.1, and provincial fuel storage, containment, and environmental requirements
Project delivery, clients, and team
Conduct site visits and field investigations to review existing conditions and support construction and commissioning activities
Participate in project meetings and collaborate with clients, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and project teams
