The ideal candidate will have strong working knowledge of North American life safety codes ( NFPA 72 and CAN/ULC-S524 ), extensive proficiency in AutoCAD , and hands-on experience producing full design packages—including P&IDs;, General Arrangement drawings, and complete wiring/terminal diagrams. Familiarity with major industrial fire & gas control platforms—specifically Notifier and Scame Systemi —is essential for this role.
Work Environment & Location Details
Work Arrangement: Work from Office (Full-time on-site at our [City, State/Province] office location).
Team Collaboration: Direct, face-to-face collaboration with interdisciplinary engineering teams, drafting leads, and project managers.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
System Design & Engineering:
Design robust, reliable fire alarm, gas detection, and fire suppression integration systems in compliance withNFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signal Code) and CAN/ULC-S524 (Standard for Installation of Fire Alarm Systems).
Develop system architectures and panel layouts utilizing Notifier fire alarm systems and Scame Systemi fire & gas safety equipment/controllers for industrial environments.
Ensure all designs meet stringent industrial safety standards applicable to hazardous areas (Classified/Ex environments), typical of Oil & Gas facilities and Power plants.
Perform voltage drop, battery sizing, and loop load calculations for NACs (Notification Appliance Circuits) and SLCs (Signaling Line Circuits).
Drafting & CAD Deliverables:
Utilize AutoCAD to produce high-quality, precise design drawing packages from initial concept through to IFC (Issued for Construction) status.
Develop P&IDs; (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams) for fire & gas systems, integrated firewater/deluge systems, and clean agent fire suppression systems.
Create General Arrangement (GA) Drawings , including equipment layout plans, panel interior/exterior layouts, and device location drawings.
Develop detailed Wiring Diagrams and Terminal Block Diagrams , ensuring accurate representation of field devices, control panels, loop interfaces, and auxiliary interlocks (HVAC shutdown, damper control, ESD interfaces).
Project & Interdisciplinary Coordination:
Collaborate on-site with E&I; (Electrical & Instrumentation), Process, Piping, and Mechanical teams to ensure seamless intersystem integration.
Participate in in-person design reviews, client meetings, hazard assessments (HAZOP/SIL), and site model walkthroughs.
Prepare Cause & Effect (C&E;) matrices and functional design specifications (FDS) for life safety systems.
Review equipment procurement submittals, vendor drawings, and Bill of Materials (BOM).
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
Education: Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Fire Protection Engineering, Drafting/Design,
or a related discipline.
Experience: 5+ years of dedicated Fire Alarm Design experience, with at least 3 years focused on Oil & Gas (upstream/downstream/offshore) or Power Generation (hydro, thermal, nuclear, or renewables) projects.
Work Arrangement: Willingness and ability to work full-time out of our office facility.
Technical Proficiencies
Fire Alarm Hardware & Systems: Direct experience or technical familiarity with Notifier fire alarm panels/loop cards and Scame Systemi fire & gas detection systems.
Standards & Codes: Solid, demonstrable expertise in NFPA 72 and CAN/ULC-S524 (plus applicable standards like NFPA 70/NEC, CSA C22.1/CEC, NFPA 101, and ULC S536/S537).
Software: Advanced mastery of AutoCAD (2D/3D). Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or MicroStation is a strong asset.
Drafting Deliverables: Deep experience producing:
Fire & Gas P&IDs;
General Arrangement (GA) Plans & Elevations
Control Panel Interconnects & Wiring Schematics
Terminal Strip Layouts & Point-to-Point Wiring Diagrams
