Location: Annie’s Place, Sooke, BC

Position Type: Casual/On-call

Schedule: 8am – 4pm; 4pm – 12am; 12am – 8am (on-call, short-notice coverage required)

Reports to: Transition House Program Coordinator

Grid Level: 10 (JJEP Wage Grid)

Wage Range: $25.95 – $29.76 per hour (Step 1–4, as per BCGEU Collective Agreement)

Union affiliation: this position requires membership with BCGEU

Position Summary

Sooke Transition House Society (STHS) provides safe shelter and supportive services to women and their dependent children who are fleeing violence or at risk of abuse. We are committed to traumainformed, feminist, and culturally sensitive practices that empower women and promote healing.

The Transition House Support Worker (Casual/On-call) plays a key role in creating a safe, welcoming environment for residents. This position provides emotional support, crisis intervention, and practical assistance while upholding the values and policies of STHS. Casual workers help ensure consistent coverage across all shifts and may be called in on short notice.

Key Responsibilities

Resident Support

- Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and practical assistance to women and their children.
- Conduct initial contact sheets and process intakes and departures according to program policies.
- Orient new residents to the house and assist with goal setting in a respectful, non-judgmental manner.

House Management

- Maintain a protected, clean, and welcoming environment, including light housekeeping and shopping for supplies as needed.
- Promote a physically and emotionally safe space by following all established safety guidelines and procedures.

Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain accurate resident files, daily logs, and critical incident reports.
- Assist with compiling daily statistical information related to client usage and intake.

Collaboration & Professional Development

- Attend staff meetings and participate in professional development workshops.
- Engage in regular debriefing with the Program Coordinator and colleagues.




- Foster positive working relationships with residents, staff, and community partners.

Other Duties

- Refer residents to community resources and accompany them to appointments for transportation and advocacy when needed.
- Carry out additional duties as directed by the Transition House Coordinator or Executive Director.

Qualifications

- Minimum of a one-year related diploma OR equivalent experience in a transition house or women’s shelter.
- Experience providing crisis intervention and/or peer support.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and standard first aid certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Understanding of issues surrounding domestic violence, including child protection.
- Strong interpersonal skills: patience, tact, empathy, and active listening.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with vulnerable populations using a trauma-informed, feminist, and culturally sensitive approach.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with limited supervision.

Working Conditions

- Work takes place in the Transition House environment.
- Transportation of residents within the community and occasionally to Langford or Victoria.
- Ability to work shift on days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and statutory holidays on an on‑call basis.
- Potential for challenging interactions requiring emotional resilience.
