Position Title: Automation Engineer

Location: St. John's, NL

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent

Additional: Valid driver's licence required; willingness to travel for site work

About the Opportunity

We're recruiting on behalf of a client — a leader in automation, digital integration, and engineering consulting, working on major industrial, utility, and energy-sector projects across Canada. Based out of their St. John's office, the Automation Engineer will design, program, and commission PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems supporting mines, power systems, and large-scale infrastructure, working from concept through commissioning alongside field technicians, design engineers, and client operations teams.

What You'll Do

- Develop, configure, and troubleshoot PLC systems on the Rockwell platform (Studio 5000/RSLogix 5000) and others
- Contribute to the design and development of automation and control system architectures for industrial and power applications
- Program, test, and troubleshoot HMI and SCADA systems across common industrial platforms
- Translate project requirements and control narratives into structured logic, graphics, alarms, and supporting documentation
- Support factory acceptance testing and commissioning/start-up activities
- Integrate instrumentation, controllers, networks, and industrial communication protocols within automation systems
- Diagnose and resolve control system, network, and field-related issues during commissioning and operation
- Prepare or update engineering deliverables including I/O lists, drawings, control philosophies, and network diagrams
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, reliable project delivery
- Interact with clients and develop long-lasting relationships

Educational and Experience Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics engineering, or a related discipline
- Registered with PEGNL, or eligible to register
- 5 years of hands-on PLC/HMI/SCADA programming with field commissioning exposure
- Robust proficiency in Rockwell/Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Studio 5000); experience with other platforms is an asset
- Demonstrated HMI/SCADA configuration (FactoryTalk View, AVEVA, etc.)
- Working knowledge of industrial networks/protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, DNP3)
- Ability to read P&IDs;, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, and network topologies
- Experience working in power systems or mining environments
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and client-facing communication skills
- Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel for site work
