Onboard Salish Sea vessels as Chief Mate, you are a leader of a professional marine team who inspires and educates passengers from all over the world! You will be working with a team who is outgoing and passionate about sharing their knowledge of our BC coast and its wildlife. As Chief Mate, you are a part of the bridge crew. Together with the Master you are responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, it’s crew and passengers.

Working with the Master, you will be assisting with:

1. Operating the vessel in accordance with Transport Canada Standards, Transport Canada Shipping Act and it’s regulations

2. Maintaining vessel logs

3. Conducting crew drills as required by Transport Canada and company SOP's

4. Start up and shutdown of the vessel each working day

5. Ensuring the vessel is ready for the start of the next day

6. Working with the shore crew to provide our guests with the best possible experience

7. Operating in accordance with the Whale Watching Guidelines as set out by the PWWA

8. Assisting in the day to day maintenance of the vessel

9. Vessel refit to help prepare the vessels at the start of the season,



including Transport Canada safety inspections; assist with shutdown and winterizing vessels at the end of the season

Required Skills and Personal Attributes:
1. Chief Mate 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate

2. ROC-MC (VHF Radio License - Marine Commercial)

3. Marine Advanced First Aid

4. MED- STCW Basic Safety

5. MED - Survival Craft, other than fast rescue boats

6. MED - Advanced Firefighting

7. SEN Limited

8. Valid Marine Medical Certificate

9. Working knowledge of the PWWA Regulations
10. To be able to work in a team workplace

11. Good interpersonal skills with passengers and crew

12. Ability to work on your feet for up to 12 hours

13. Previous experience in the whale watching industry and knowledge of local marine wildlife is considered a strong asset but not required
14. An understanding of electrical and mechanical systems including light marine diesel engines combined with the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair small issues should they arise
