Faculty

Relations serves as the planning, policy advising, and administration office for teaching and research faculty, librarian and archivist faculty, and academic administrators. The Director, Faculty Labour Relations is responsible for promoting and ensuring consistent application of academic employment and labour related policies, and relevant legislation; providing day-to-day leadership in the interpretation and administration of faculty collective agreements, policies and procedures. The role leads a team of Faculty Relations staff responsible for processing academic appointments, renewals, tenure, promotion, salary reviews and administration, leaves, and non-health and welfare benefits administration, providing guidance and direction as needed.

The role advises all members the university regarding interpretations and applications of the terms and conditions of faculty collective agreements and responds to issues such as conflict resolution, performance management, disciplinary processes and grievances, working directly with Deans, academic administrators and the Simon Fraser University Faculty Association (SFUFA), as required on the development of strategies and approaches to resolve complex LR and employee issues.



The Director participates in negotiations with the Faculty Association to support the resolution of complaints, grievances, and arbitrations, and assists in developing the collective bargaining position of the university.

Juris

Doctor (JD) with seven years of labour and employee relations experience in a complex unionized public sector environment, including experience in the application, administration and interpretation of collective agreements and related legislation, as well as in grievance procedures or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Excellent knowledge of employment practices in the public sector. Excellent planning skills.

Ability to interpret and provide advice regarding the terms and conditions of the collective agreement, university policies, and statutory obligations. Ability to plan, develop, and conduct training programs. Proficient in the use of enterprise level human resource and financial management information systems.
