About the role
As a FoodShare Driver Class 1 on the Social Enterprise team, you will play a vital role in ensuring that fresh, healthy food reaches our diverse customers across Toronto. This position combines driving and logistical coordination with meaningful customer engagement. You will act as an ambassador for FoodShare’s mission, providing excellent service and supporting the smooth delivery of produce and meals to community markets, schools, and individual households.
Note: This position is subject to temporary layoff during the summer months and other times when order volume is low. These periods are typically predictable and communicated in advance.
Employment is conditional upon approval by FoodShare’s auto insurance provider prior to an interview. See further details on this below under Requirements.
What you'll do:
Duties include (but are not limited to):
1. Delivery and Operations Execution:
- Follow FoodShare’s health and safety guidelines, including safe food handling and lifting practices, and maintain a clean and sanitary vehicle interior
- Maintain accurate daily delivery records and proactively perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, logging maintenance needs and reporting any delivery issues
- Effective communication with vehicle breakdowns, delays, or any other incidents to ensure minimal disruptions to deliveries
- Safely operate FoodShare vehicles, including cube vans, buses, and mini-vans.
- Deliver produce and meals on time to a range of destinations: households, wholesale customers, Community Food Markets, and schools.
- Prepare and pack customer orders following the packing sheets and order documentation.
- Load and unload skids by hand or with pump trucks/pallet jacks,
following safety procedures.
- Conduct quality control checks to ensure product integrity and accurate counts.
- Use digital tools (e.g., mobile delivery app, Delivery Route software to improve routes, and Google Chat) to follow routes, track customer service needs, and monitor deliveries.
- Complete daily delivery records and report delivery outcomes or issues.
1. Enhanced Customer Service
- Proactively contact customers ahead of deliveries to confirm instructions and accommodate special requests.
- Provide real-time updates on delivery status, especially in the event of delays.
- Educate customers about FoodShare products, including origin, nutrition, and use.
- Follow up after deliveries to ensure customer satisfaction and resolve concerns
- Build and maintain solid relationships with community members and stakeholders.
- Represent FoodShare with professionalism and warmth in every interaction.
3. Administrative Tasks
- Ensure all relevant documentation/records are maintained and kept in a secure location.
- Complete and maintain accurate records of daily deliveries, including time, location, and order details.
- Collect and securely handle cash and cheques from customers.
- Follow proper cash handling and deposit protocols.
- Submit drivers’ gas receipts and related delivery expenses for reimbursement or recordkeeping.
- Submit delivery-related reports and communicate any issues to the Orders Desk or Senior Driver Coordinator.
- Participate in FoodShare staff and team meetings, all staff training, and reporting requirements (such as timesheets) and handle other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:
- Legally authorized to work in Canada.
- A valid Ontario G License, a minimum of 3+ years of insured experience, with no major driving infractions in the last 7 years. A driver's Abstract will be required
- Repetitive tasks such as bending, crouching, lifting, and reaching.
- Full shifts standing and working on your feet throughout the day
- Use of hand tools (Pump Truck, Pull dollies) and mechanized equipment.
- Regularly lifting over 40 lbs.
- Computer skills (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, Google Suite), is an asset
Salary & Benefits
Total Compensation
- Salary: $27.17/hr
- Benefits: Vacation in pay (8%), paid days for wellness days & sick days and personal days will be pro-rated based on days worked/contract dates, and a daily lunch stipend.
- Contract Type: Casual, hours not guaranteed. This position is subject to temporary layoff during the summer months and other times when order volume is low.
Additional Leave
- Personal Leave Days: 10 paid personal leave days per year, prorated based on start date
- Wellness Days: 10 paid wellness days/sick leave per year, prorated based on start date
