The Role
We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as an Engineering Services Technician. This position plays a key role in providing technical and customer support for the design and servicing of new and existing industrial, commercial, and residential electrical distribution facilities. The role involves performing overhead and underground service analyses and designs, preparing estimates and work packages using Geographic Information System (GIS) and design software, conducting field assessments, and coordinating with customers, contractors, local authorities, and internal Operations teams to ensure all work meets Burlington Hydro’s standards, policies, and regulatory requirements.
This is an on-site position at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington, and is a unionized role governed by the collective agreement. The role is being posted to fill an existing vacancy, and eligible employees may participate in our Hybrid Work from Home Program, which allows for remote work one (1) day per week.
What You Will Do Design overhead and underground electrical distribution layouts for new services and system upgrades, including conducting field assessments, data collection and related analyses
Prepare construction design packages, including drawings, sketches, labour and material estimates, and requisitions
Respond to customer, contractor, electrician, and other stakeholder inquiries regarding service requirements, policies, and standards; conduct on-site meetings when required
Assist with field layout of plant and perform associated calculations (e.g., guying, voltage drop, pulling tension)
Review and coordinate multi-lot developments such as subdivisions and townhouse projects
Investigate and resolve customer concerns related to voltage, vegetation/tree conflicts, or power quality
Act as a liaison between customers, internal crews,
and external contractors to support coordinated project planning and execution
Prepare, monitor, and track instruction orders throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring timely progress, completion, and proper closeout
Perform transformer loading and meter data analysis, recommend upgrades to address overload conditions, and monitor transformer and related asset stock levels relevant to design activities
Identify and report any damaged or deteriorated system assets observed while in the field
All other duties as assigned What We Are Looking For Engineering Technician / Technologist diploma or degree from an accredited post-secondary institution
Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) and/or Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation is preferred
3–5 years of engineering experience in electrical distribution system design or equivalent technical setting
Valid G Class Ontario driver’s licence with a clean abstract What You’ll Need to Be Successful Knowledge of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems and applicable industry standards (e.g. CSA, OESC)
Proficient with design software and CAD systems (preferably AutoCAD, Spida Calc, and Hexagon)
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
Strong mathematical and electrical systems knowledge, including AC circuits
Ability to interpret drawings, standards, policies, and codes, and apply sound problem-solving and analytical skills
Effective communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to learn new technologies, work effectively in changing or ambiguous situations, and maintain composure in all circumstances
Physical fitness to safely perform work in all weather conditions
Solid knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and best practices
Reliable, energetic, and motivated with a proven safety and attendance record
