Kohl’s School is a premier First Nation school serving more than 70 students from Junior Preschool to

Grade 12. This year Heart Lake First Nation has added middle school programming and requires a full time teacher for grade 6-9 Language Arts and Senior High English. We teach the Alberta Accredited curriculum enriched by First Nation Language, culture, traditions, values and morals.

Position Summary

Kohl’s School is seeking a passionate and skilled English Language Arts Teacher (Grades 6–9) and some

High School coursework to join a collaborative and high-performing teaching team for this school year and next.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge of the Alberta English Language Arts

Programs of Study and support students in developing strong literacy skills, critical thinking, and effective communication. The teacher will foster critical literacy,



creative expression, and thoughtful engagement with a wide range of texts, while collaborating closely with colleagues to ensure coherence and alignment with the goals of schooling for Heart Lake First Nation.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Powerful Learning

 Develop short- and long-term English Language Arts curriculum plans aligned with Alberta

Programs of Study and the Virtual Learning System.

 Design and deliver rich, inquiry-based, and concept-driven learning experiences that engage students with a variety of literary, informational, and media texts.

 Explicitly teach reading comprehension strategies, writing processes, oral communication skills,

and critical literacy.

 Support students in developing voice, clarity, and accuracy in written and oral expression.

 Integrate diverse texts and perspectives to promote inclusion, empathy, and global awareness.

 Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learner needs and learning profiles, including intervention and enrichment.

 Use a range of formative and summative assessment strategies to assess literacy skills, thinking,

and communication.

 Analyze student work and assessment data to inform instructional decisions and support student growth.

Build Strong Relationships & A Respectful Classroom Environment

 Foster a positive classroom culture grounded in respect, belonging, curiosity, and high expectations.

 Support student well-being,



confidence, perseverance, and language development in learning.

 Apply consistent classroom organization and management practices that promote engagement,

safety, and learning.

 Maintain clear, respectful, and professional communication with students and families.

 Build strong partnerships with families in support of student learning and success.

Required Qualifications

 Bachelor of Education;

 Eligible for or in possession of an Alberta Teaching Certificate or Alberta Interim Teaching

Certificate;

 Fluent mastery in English, written and oral communication;

 Valid first-aid certification or willingness to become certified;

Preferred Assets

 Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle or secondary level;

 Experience with First Nation Traditions and Culture

 Experience with inquiry-based and concept-driven pedagogy;

 Demonstrated use of instructional technology to enhance literacy learning;
