Whether you are an experienced emergency clinician or a recent graduate, this is a fantastic prospect to take the lead in providing critical, life-saving care to equine patients in a fast-paced, supportive environment.
Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is located 10 minutes west of Stony Plain (Alberta, Canada) or 30 minutes west of Edmonton and is easily accessed off of TransCanada Highway 16 on Range Road 25. You must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle as we are not on a bus route.
We are a leading practice focused on providing exceptional medical care to equine athletes, companion horses, and breeding stock. We pride ourselves on our collaborative team approach to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.
As our practice continues to grow, we are seeking a dedicated professional to enhance our after-hours emergency services and contribute to our mission of delivering top-tier equine care.
Time Allocation
Your time will be allocated across several key areas, providing a dynamic and engaging workload.
- Emergency Case Management (50%)
- Respond to after-hours emergencies, including trauma, colic and acute illness.
- Diagnose, stabilize and treat urgent medical conditions, ensuring the best possible outcomes for critical cases.
- Handle hospital-based and field emergency calls. (The majority of emergencies are haul into the hospital with a small percentage of emergencies on farm within a 30-minute radius of the clinic.)
- Intensive Care Management (20%)
- Oversee the care of ICU patients, managing their treatment overnight and ensuring a smooth transition to daytime veterinary staff.
- Work with overnight technicians and interns to monitor patients, administer medication and address complications in real time.
- Professional Development & Mentorship (15%) - Participate in continuing education, case discussions, and mentoring interns,
support staff and students to provide a well-rounded team.
- Client Communication & Education (10%) - Provide clear and compassionate communication to clients during stressful situations. Guide clients through treatment options, offering reassurance and expert advice to support them during emergencies.
- 5% Other – attend monthly staff meetings, other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- REQUIRED: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent veterinary degree) who is licensed to practice in Canada.
- ASSET: Experience in equine emergency medicine.
- Strong interest in emergency and critical care with the ability to make rapid decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (in English), with the ability to deliver calm, clear guidance to clients during emergencies.
- A team-oriented mindset and a commitment to excellence in equine care.
