Spend the winter of a lifetime working with international youth at Tamwood International Camps in Vancouver and Toronto!
Tamwood International Camps offers young people between the ages of 12 and 18 the chance to learn English in a welcoming, fun environment as well as the option to try activities like rock climbing, mountain biking, art, dance, and more.
That’s where you come in!
General Counselors are primarily responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of a group of Tamwood campers. Counsellors attend, participate, and deliver camp programming and ensure campers are happy.
Schedule:
The schedule is from Monday to Friday from 12:30pm to 4:30pm (this departure hour could be later depending on what time the last activity of the day ends). The applicants need to have weekend availability from 8AM for full-day excursions, 2 days excursion with overnight stays or airport pickup and drop off campers on Sundays.
Contract length:
- Vancouver camp: From January 7th to February 4th
- Toronto camp: From January 7th to January 28th
Training for the Camps Staff will be provided before the start date
Reporting Structure
General Counselors report directly to Senior Counselors and report indirectly to Coordinators, the Camp Director and to Head Office.
Desired Qualifications
- College diploma or undergraduate degree studies or relevant experience with children
- Prior experience working with or supervising children
- Positive interpersonal and problem solving skills, ability to work independently and within a team
- Ability to maintain enthusiasm and energy for long durations of time
- Ability to work under pressure with changing priorities and to meet deadlines
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with sensitive issues with tact and discretion
- Must have valid Basic First Aid and CPR C certification and Criminal Record Check by January 1st
Work performed
- Responsible for a managing a Counselor Group (a group of campers)
- Supervises campers; at activities, on excursions and during meal times
- Ensures campers are prepared and on time for activities
- Ensures camper inclusion within counselor group and the camp community
- Generates and maintains camper enthusiasm for English classes, activities and other special events
- Participate in and assist with evening programs & excursions (ex. Disco night, Talent Show, Ice Skating, Bowling)
- Participate and assist Activity Instructors with daily activities (ex. sports, kayaking, mountain biking, arts & crafts)
- Promotes the English Only Policy
- Assists with night duty and on call duty as assigned
- Attends all meetings as scheduled by the Camp Administrative Team (ex. Morning Huddle)
- Monitors campers’ health including nutrition, hydration, sun protection and overall wellness
- Assists with creating and delivering camp programming (ex. Conversation Club and Talent Shows)
- Assists with camper arrival and departure procedures
- Active participation in pre and post camp periods
- Administers first aid as required
- Adheres to all Tamwood Policies and Procedures as outlined in Staff Manual
- Completion of accident, incident and discipline report forms as required
- Submits final feedback evaluation at the end of contract
- Attends all meals while on duty
- Wears the camp t-shirt at all times while on duty
- Performs other duties as needed
