The Role
We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as a Health & Safety Specialist. Reporting to the Director, Health & Safety, this position plays a key role in providing health, safety, and environmental expertise to support business objectives and the Health, Safety, and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) and to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and legislative requirements. The role develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates health, safety, and environmental programs, systems, and initiatives, while supporting continuous improvement, risk reduction, and a strong safety culture across the organization.
This is an on-site position located at 1340 Brant Street, Burlington.

What You Will Do Develop, implement, manage, and monitor health, safety, and environmental programs, processes, and procedures in alignment with the HSEMS
Lead and support health, safety, and environmental activities, including Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings, safety meetings, training activities, hazard registries and safe work procedure reviews
Assist and support incident investigations and risk assessments, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventative actions, program enhancements and training
Develop health, safety, and environmental documentation including policies, programs, processes, plans, procedures, and guidelines
Conduct training needs assessments with leaders and develop annual training plans
Maintain the training matrix and training calendar within the HSEMS and BIS Safety
Lead, support and implement internal and external health, safety, and environmental program audit activities,
including audits and self-assessments to achieve certification (COR®)
Conduct field inspections and compliance reviews and provide recommendations for risk reduction and improvement
Provide health, safety, and environmental subject matter expertise and guidance to leaders, employees, committees, and internal stakeholders
Partner with internal stakeholders on health, safety, and environmental matters and escalate issues as appropriate
Establish, monitor, and analyze health, safety, and environmental performance metrics and incident trends, and recommend improvement actions
Act as the Asbestos Coordinator, develop, implement, manage and monitor the Asbestos Management Program
Evaluate the effectiveness of health, safety, and environmental programs and initiatives and recommend enhancements to improve performance and reduce risk
Monitor changes to applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation, regulations, and industry best practices and provide recommendations to support ongoing compliance
Develop and deliver safety communications, presentations, and awareness initiatives
Provide health, safety, and environmental expertise in the planning, design, and implementation of projects and organizational initiatives
Support Facilities and Security programs and projects as required
All other duties as assigned What We Are Looking For Post-secondary degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences,
or a related field
Professional designation, or the ability to attain designation within five years of the date of hire, is an asset (e.g., Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA)
Minimum 5 years of related occupational health, safety, environmental, and/or security experience
Experience in the Electrical Utility Industry or as a Powerline Technician is an asset
Experience in a unionized utility environment is an asset
Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence with a clean driver’s abstract What You’ll Need to Be Successful Strong knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems (HSEMS)
Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations
Knowledge of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules, Utility Work Protection Code and generally accepted electrical utility sector safety policies, best practices, and standards
Solid knowledge of the COR® program and all required training
Asbestos Management knowledge and/or certifications and training
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify trends and recommend solutions
Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization, including senior leadership
Robust proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Ability to proactively identify risks, anticipate needs, and recommend improvements
