Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Junior Environmental Scientist to join our team in St. Johns, NFLD. The successful candidate will work within the Atlantic Sciences group under the supervision of the lead biologist. Primary responsibility will be completion of fisheries, wetland and aquatic resource assessments on wide variety of projects, as delegated by the lead biologist.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist in the planning and execution of fisheries and aquatic resources investigations
- Support and conduct terrestrial biological studies where required
- Support and conduct estuary/marine biological studies where required
- In office Construction Monitoring and environmental compliance Inspections
- Report writing of aquatic habitat assessments, environmental impact assessments, wetland assessment and impact reports, and environmental mitigation/protection plans
- Prepare proposals, regulatory scoping documents and technical reports
- Prepare and obtain regulatory approvals for a wide variety of projects

Qualifications

- University Degree in Biology or Environmental Science, however applicants with technical diplomas may be considered
- 1-3 years’ experience, preferably in the consulting sector
- Solid technical and/or academic background in biological sciences
- Relevant technical or regulatory experience from the consulting industry
- Experience with some or all of the following:
- Fish inventory and aquatic habitat assessment techniques




- Fish life history and habitat requirements, particularly Atlantic Canada fish species
- Familiarity with provincial (Newfoundland and Labarodor) and federal regulatory requirements pertaining to terrestrial and aquatic environments
- Marine surveys for Seabirds, Marrine Mammals
- Esturary/Marine collection of water and sediment samples
- Experience conducting terrestrial biological studies including large and small mammal, songbirds, amphibians, Species at Risk

- Able to work effectively as a member of a team, and also independently with minimal supervision and direction
- Able to demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills
