OCT Spec Ed – High School

:

Vezina Secondary School invites applications for a qualified Spec Ed Teacher to commence employment for the 2026/2027 school year.

We are a First Nations school located in Northern Ontario James Bay, with an enrollment of 140 students in Grades 9-12. We offer a competitive salary based on experience and qualifications, a travel and relocation allowance, and a fully furnished housing unit with subsidized rent.

Qualifications:

- Current registration and in valuable standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)
- Minimum Bachelor of Education Degree
- Spec Ed qualifications
- Minimum 5 years experience in Spec Ed

Duties:

- Write IEPs
- Update IEPs each semester
- Help teachers implement accommodations
- Help teachers support IEP students
- Read and interpret psycho-educational reports
- Meet with the psycho-educational testing team to go over reports
- High Cost Special Education Programming paper work
- Advocate for students who need testing or re-testing
- Support student and staff mental health
- Work individually with high needs students in a small group, either within the classroom or on a withdrawal basis;
- Plan and implement appropriate programming for high needs students
- Collaborate with SERT at elementary school when needed
- Collaborate with Jordan’s Principle workers to provide services to students
- Transfer IEP’s from elementary school
- Update course outline for high needs student programming
- Monitor the progress of students as outlined in their IEP
- Provide scheduled credit or non-credit bearing support to student(s) identified through an in-school process
- Provide liaison with parent, teacher,



appropriate Board personnel and other agencies to assist in developing appropriate program
- Collaborate in the development and implementation of program accommodations, alternative program and/or modifications
- Assist with other documentation (e.g. behaviour plans), interviews and case conferences as deemed necessary through the in-school process
- Coordinate the process for referral and presentation to the SRT and Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) and/or other agencies and Board departments as required on behalf of the Principal
- Coordinate the annual review process for students in a resource support placement in consultation with teachers, appropriate support personnel, parent(s)/guardian(s) and students
- Teach one Special Education course that involves providing customized, highly individualized instruction for students with unique learning needs or disabilities.

Requirements:

- Dedicated and passionate
- Strong communication skills are required for working with students, parents, staff members and consultants
- Ability to adapt curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities
- Ability to deliver appropriate Individual Education Plans within the classroom
- A willingness to live in an isolated community and participate as a member of the community

Start Date: August 2026

Salary: As per AFNEA Pay Grid

Duration: Permanent position,



with probation period as per board policy.

About Attawapiskat First Nation

Attawapiskat is a remote fly-in Cree community on the west coast of James Bay and north of Timmins. Kattawapiskak is a JK to G8 school, each grade has two sections with the student population of about 400. It is a comparatively new school with four computer labs, modern classrooms with smart boards, and a Special Ed department to help students at risk.

Most of the classes have TA and TE to help the teachers and support students. The teachers on staff are an experienced and wonderful team. The school has a modern fitness room for staff as well. Teachers can also get purified Culligan drinking water free of charge from the treatment plant.

The school year calendar reflects the culture and interests of the community and staff. School begins in the last week of August.
