The Small Engine Mechanic will primarily be responsible for inspecting, testing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of small engines, including gas, diesel and electric.
The Small Engine
Mechanic will also be required to reassemble engines once repairs have been completed, complete reports on finished work, and perform duties in a safe and healthy manner at all times.

Mechanic may be required to complete routine maintenance or diagnosis of all sizes of rental inventory, and may be required to cross-train with other mechanics to work on different classes of equipment and inventory.

Mechanic will also be responsible for A-1 Rent-Alls’ “green tag” process, wherein equipment returned from customers is evaluated and serviced to ensure that it is ready to rent again.
Job Duties
- Consult manufacturer's manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints to determine test and maintenance procedures for different pieces of equipment.
- Inspect and test operation of different pieces of equipment, diagnose faults using pneumatic, electrical, and computer testing devices and precision measuring instruments.
- Test, inspect, repair, adjust and maintain different pieces of equipment, including gas, diesel, and electric engines. Determine if there are any malfunctions, missing or broken parts.
- Investigate damaged equipment to determine cause of damage.
- Perform routine maintenance such as cleaning and oiling parts, honing cylinders, and tuning ignition systems.
- Calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturers' specifications.
- Repair or replace defective parts such as magnetos, water pumps, gears, pistons, and carburetors, using hand tools.
- Reassemble engines after repair or maintenance work is complete.
- Record repairs made, time spent, and parts used.
- Perform scheduled maintenance service on equipment.
- Complete all maintenance and repair activities in a protected and healthy manner according to Company policies and procedures.
- Work with parts counter clerk to procure parts as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Diploma or completion of an apprenticeship program in mechanics, small engine repair or a related field.
- 2 years of experience in mechanics and engine repair.
- Strong understanding of the operation, maintenance and repair of small engines.
- Experience working with 2 and 4 stroke engines.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Knowledge of both inboard and outboard engines.
- Red Seal endorsement would be considered an asset.
- Completion of a small engine or equipment mechanic trade certification is an asset.
- Strong management, delegation, planning and leadership skills.
- Strong communication and problem solving skills.
- Excellent time management and project management skills.
- High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
- Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise necessary cost control measures.
- Able to work well under pressure.

- Ability to maintain organization of maintenance schedule and files in a changing environment.

Work Conditions
- Overtime as required.
- Manual dexterity required to use hand and power tools, small parts/pieces and diagnostic equipment.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment.
- Lifting or moving up to 50 lbs. may be required.
- Work in noisy environment.
- May be exposed to chemicals and strong odours such as gasoline.
