Our client, an established property and casualty insurance organization, is seeking an experienced Sr. Underwriting Governance & Compliance Specialist to join its Corporate Underwriting team in Edmonton.
Reporting to the Director of Underwriting and Product Development, this role combines complaint resolution, underwriting governance, internal audit, compliance, and regulatory oversight. You will conduct objective post-decision complaint reviews, prepare final position responses, support underwriting audits, and identify trends that can lead to stronger processes, training, and customer outcomes.
This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned insurance professional who brings strong P&C; coverage knowledge, sound judgement, and the ability to interpret policy wording, underwriting practices, and regulatory requirements.
What You’ll Do
- Assess complaints from customers, stakeholders, regulators, and other parties in a timely, objective, and resolution-focused manner.
- Investigate complaints and prepare clear, well-supported final position letters.
- Analyze complaint trends and present recommendations for process, policy, or service improvements to management.
- Build and maintain internal audit checklists, templates, and processes to promote consistency across the organization.
- Participate in audits of underwriting files to ensure compliance with corporate standards, policies, processes, and underwriting guidelines.
- Communicate audit observations, recommendations, best practices, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Analyze underwriting trends and prepare reports and findings for management.
- Identify training needs through audit and compliance activities and support the development and delivery of training plans.
- Monitor emerging community and stakeholder concerns, identify recurring themes, and contribute to discussions around policy and training improvements.
- Interpret applicable regulations, guidelines,
and legislation and help ensure organizational practices remain compliant.
- Maintain centralized governance records for broker programs, audit status, review frequency, and Corporate Underwriting oversight requirements.
- Support internal audit readiness, regulatory preparedness, and reinsurance audit requirements.
- Perform other related responsibilities as required.
What You’ll Bring
- A minimum of 10 years of insurance industry experience .
- Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance, including claims, coverage, underwriting risks, and risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to read and accurately interpret policy wording and claims files.
- Experience evaluating documents, processes, and policies to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and areas of risk.
- Ability to interpret regulations, guidelines, and legislation and apply them in a practical business environment.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex or sensitive decisions with tact and diplomacy.
- A professional, service-oriented approach supported by empathy, objectivity, and sound judgement.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- An innovative, forward-thinking mindset.
- Guidewire experience is an asset.
- Experience with internal audit processes is an asset.
