Haida Child & Family is a Haida-led organization providing culturally appropriate wrap around services to Haida children and families.

Position Summary

This position is a casual, temporary employment opportunity to support a pilot Teen Centre program in Gaw Tlagée. Employment is expected to end in October 2026. The proposed hours of operation for the Teen Centre shifts are:

Wed–Thu: 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Fri: 12:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Sat: 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Hours subject to change based on worker availability.

The Youth Worker is responsible for the day-to-day operation, supervision, and engagement within the Teen Centre. This role focuses on creating a safe, inclusive, and youth-driven workplace where teens can gather, participate in programming, and develop positive social connections.

Working within established safety and program guidelines that reflect the vision and mission of Haida Child & Family, the Youth Worker supports youth engagement, models positive behavior, and fosters a welcoming space that promotes creativity, learning, and well-being. This position does not carry a formal caseload but plays a key preventative and supportive role in youth development.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Facility Operations & Supervision

- Open, close, and monitor the Teen Centre in accordance with operational procedures.

- Provide consistent supervision to ensure a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.

- Maintain awareness of participant activity and respond proactively to risks or concerns.

- Follow and uphold all program safety standards and policies.

Program Delivery & Youth Engagement

- Plan and facilitate both passive programming (e.g., games, art, drop-in activities) and active programming (e.g., group activities, skill-building sessions).





- Encourage youth participation and co-creation of programming opportunities.

- Foster a youth-oriented space that reflects participants’ interests, culture, and voices.

- Model positive engagement and relationship-building practices.

Conflict Resolution & Safety

- Apply conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to support a positive environment.

- Address behavioral issues appropriately, maintaining dignity and respect for all youth.

- Document and report incidents in accordance with the Program Safety Plan.

- Identify and respond to emerging concerns, escalating as needed.

Team & Peer Support

- Share knowledge, model best practices, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

- Communicate effectively with team members regarding youth needs, trends, and safety concerns.

Qualifications and Experience

- Basic First Aid and CPR certification.

- Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution and de-escalation.

- Experience working with youth in recreational, community, or educational settings.

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- An equivalent combination of education, lived experience, and relevant work experience will be considered.

Preferred / Additional Skills

- Trauma-informed practice or youth mental health awareness.

- Group facilitation or activity planning experience.

- Knowledge of positive youth development principles.

- Crisis prevention training.

- Basic administrative or reporting skills.

Working Conditions

- Shift work, including afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

- Work is primarily in a youth drop-in setting with variable activity levels.

- Requires the ability to manage occasional high-stress or conflict situations.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Solicitor General Criminal Records Check.

- Must hold a valid BC Driver’s License.

- Use of personal vehicle may be required.
