Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager and in collaboration with Clinical Pharmacist(s), the pharmacy technician is responsible and accountable for supporting a safe, efficient and effective drug distribution system within the overall medication use process in accordance with professional standards and hospital policies.
Duties include, but are not limited to: preparing non-hazardous sterile and non-sterile compounds, packaging, narcotic and controlled drug management, inventory control, drug procurement and inventory management, dispensing medications, refilling of automated dispensing units, and supporting all automation equipment relating to the medication management system.
Support medication reconciliation through accurate gathering and documentation of a patient’s Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) and participate in departmental activities that promote a safe,
patient-centered environment contributing to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.
Requirements
- Current registration in good standing as a Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists is required.
Experience, Skills and Abilities
- Work experience as a Pharmacy Technician, preference for those who have worked in a hospital pharmacy setting.
- Previous experience with order entry is preferred.
- Experience mixing IVs and TPN is preferred.
- Experience in inventory and ordering preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of electronic drug management systems preferred.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills to interact tactfully and sensitively with patients, staff, physicians, and the general public.
- Ability to work as a team member in a busy environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
