The Manager, Surgical Quality Improvement and Patient Safety is a critical leadership position within the Sprott Department of Surgery, responsible for advancing a comprehensive surgical quality improvement strategy across all surgical divisions and departments at UHN. This role also provides support in overseeing patient safety and associated committees for the Sprott Program in partnership with the Clinical Director and Program Medical Director.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Surgical Clinical Reviewers and a Quality Improvement & Data Coordinator
- Oversee daily operations, resource allocation, and fiscal accountability
- Champion quality improvement (QI) capacity building across Sprott
Quality Improvement & Patient Safety
- Design, lead, and implement quality improvement initiatives across surgical services (project management and execution)
- Partner with leadership to oversee the Sprott Program Quality of Care Committee (QCC)
- Strengthen processes related to serious safety event review, recommendations, and follow-through
- Identify opportunities to improve clinical outcomes and patient experience
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Oversee collection, analysis, and interpretation of clinical quality data
- Monitor key performance indicators and quality metrics
- Develop reports, dashboards, briefings, and presentations for senior leadership
Governance & Committees
- Lead and support key committees (e.g., Sprott Centre for Quality & Safety Collaborative, QCC)
- Develop agendas, presentations, minutes,
and governance frameworks
- Ensure strong accountability, reporting, and alignment with organizational priorities
Strategic Planning & Operations
- Contribute to short- and long-term planning aligned with UHN Surgery Strategic Action Plan
- Develop and implement operational policies and procedures
- Monitor progress and performance against goals and targets
Key Competencies

- Expertise in quality improvement methodologies and healthcare data analytics
- Project management and execution
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement abilities
- Proven ability to lead change and drive large-scale initiatives
- Strategic thinker with strong problem‑solving skills
- Experience working with multidisciplinary clinical teams
Education
- Master’s degree in Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, Health Administration, Business Administration, or a related field (required)
- Regulated health professional designation (preferred)
Experience
- 4–6 years of relevant experience in healthcare quality improvement and patient safety
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a complex healthcare environment
Professional Credentials (Assets)
- Certification in Quality Improvement and/or Patient Safety
- Active membership in relevant professional organizations
