The McGill University Department of Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Tenure Track) in conjunction with a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 1. In alignment with our commitment to fostering Indigenous leadership in health sciences and academic excellence, this is a special priority call for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis scholars. McGill University is a signatory of DORA (Declaration on Research Assessment) and this Canada Research Chair is open to both external candidates, and to internal candidates. The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. The McGill University Department of Family Medicine is dedicated to deepening its engagement with Indigenous communities and expanding its leadership, research, and teaching capacity in areas relevant to Indigenous health. To this end, we invite applications from scholars who integrate relevant experience and expertise in Indigenous knowledges, methodologies, histories, traditions, languages, or systems of laws and governance. We encourage applications from scholars who employ CBPR (community-based participatory research) methods. By integrating these vital perspectives into our research and pedagogical frameworks, the successful candidate will play a transformative role in expanding the department’s capacity for impactful, community‑aligned health.
The McGill University Department of Family Medicine is home to an exceptional community of primary health care professionals and scholars from a variety of academic backgrounds. Our diverse group of researchers, students, and support staff are committed to contributing to the health of the population, by training graduate students (MSc and PhD), residents, medical students, and other health care professionals. Our educational and research mission support excellent and innovative programs, promoting innovation in practice, developing research and scholarly activity, promoting curriculum innovation and education research, and actively engaging in international and global health activities. Our department is involved in diverse scholarly pursuits and is committed to the advancement of the academic discipline of family medicine, to community health and primary care. Current active areas of investigation include health services and policy, knowledge translation, public health, medical education, global health, information technology, diverse qualitative methods and methodologies, clinical care, and biostatistics. With graduate programs at both the master’s and PhD levels, we are methodological leaders in participatory and mixed-methods research with a demonstrated record of national and international leadership with extensive collaborations with other departments, faculties and communities. These activities are strengthened through close integration with the McGill health network (RUISSS), spanning a large geographical region that includes Montreal (Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe) and extends to northern regions including the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee, in partnership with the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), and Nunavik. Comprising twelve urban and rural University Family Medicine Groups across the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal and broader Quebec, our clinics serve a registered patient base exceeding 140,000. Affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, these groups provide an opportunity to bridge the gap between research, education, and community health.
The successful nominee for this Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 1 will possess a distinguished record of research excellence, characterized by significant national and international recognition within the fields of Family Medicine or Primary Care. As a CRC Tier 1 holder, the incumbent is expected to engage in innovative programs of research that help train the next generation of highly skilled scholars through student supervision, innovative teaching, and meaningful community outreach. Following a successful evaluation, the successful candidate that satisfies the conditions will be supported by the University for nomination to a CRC.
Candidates for the CRC will be assessed based on demonstrated evidence of existing outstanding original research, and clear recognition as an original researcher of world‑class calibre and as a leader in their field. Applicants should review both the Eligibility and Selection Criteria for Tier 1 chairs. The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program provides an opportunity to nominate a diverse cadre of outstanding researchers for professorships in areas that align with McGill’s Strategic Research Plan. Chairholders are nationally recognized as exceptional researchers and innovators in their discipline. In pursuit of fulfilling McGill’s Calls to Action as outlined in the final report of the Provost’s Task Force on Indigenous Studies and Indigenous Education (2017), and in agreement with our obligations vis‑à‑vis the CRC Program’s Institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan Requirements, this special call welcomes both external scholars and internal candidates from McGill University who are First Nations, Inuit or Métis. Consistent with its land acknowledgement and pathway towards reconciliation, McGill University welcomes applicants whose academic trajectory, positionality, and expertise are connected to provincial and proximate/regional First Nations and Inuit.
The successful candidate will be actively involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Family Medicine and be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in research, pedagogy, and supervision. They will be expected to maintain an ambitious research program in family medicine and/or primary healthcare of the highest international standards and disseminate their research findings through peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to formal teaching of graduate courses, develop courses at all levels in their areas of specialization, supervise and mentor graduate students, contribute to the intellectual life of the department and the University, and develop Indigenous academic leadership capacity at McGill University. They will be expected to contribute to the academic mission of the department in areas such as Indigenous health research or clinical innovation, course development addressing Indigenous health priorities and ways of knowing for health qualified or graduate students, or curricular reform. The successful candidate will also be expected to be involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community.
