Overview

Orthopedic Surgeons in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) provide trauma‑focused orthopedic surgical care for CAF members, both in Canada and overseas. They can lead the CAF Health Services, mentor, and educate other health‑care personnel.

Primary Responsibilities

- Provide orthopedic consultation and care for CAF members in Canada.
- Lead surgical or emergent care teams in Canada and deployed settings.
- Educate and advise multidisciplinary teams on trauma and orthopedic care.
- Maintain clinical currency by holding a position within a civilian health‑care facility.
- Contribute to the development and application of health‑care policies within the CAF.

Work Setting

Orthopedic Surgeons embed as staff in tertiary care civilian hospitals, support primary care clinicians at CAF Health Services Clinics, and participate in education, training and research nationally and internationally. They receive annual military skills training and may deploy to domestic and international operations.

Entry Requirements

- Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an unrestricted licence to practice Orthopedic Surgery.

Basic Military Officer Qualification (BMOQ)



and Basic Medical Officer Course (BMOC) are required, followed by further specialty and advanced training opportunities available within the CAF.

Part‑time Opportunities (Primary Reserve)

Primary Reserve Orthopedic Surgeons maintain civilian positions and commit to military training and deployments. A minimum annual commitment of 14 days of service is required.
