A well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Director of Payroll to lead payroll operations in a complex, highly regulated environment. This role is ideal for a strategic, detail-oriented payroll leader who thrives in high-volume settings and enjoys partnering cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and executive leadership.About the RoleThe Director of Payroll oversees end-to-end payroll operations for a large, multi-location workforce and ensures compliance with all applicable wage, hour, and tax regulations. This role reports to senior HR leadership and manages a dedicated payroll team.ResponsibilitiesPayroll Operations & ComplianceLead and oversee accurate, timely processing of semi-monthly payroll for a large employee population.Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local wage, hour, and payroll tax regulations, including California and multi-state requirements.Review and approve payrolls, filings, and related deliverables prior to submission.Serve as operational backup for payroll processing as needed.Perform additional duties in support of organizational needs.Audit, Risk & Regulatory ManagementCoordinate and lead internal and external audits, including fiscal, governmental, retirement, workers’ compensation, advantages, and wage and hour audits.Conduct ongoing internal audits of payroll processes, tax filings, accruals, rates, and controls.Partner with Finance, HR, and external auditors to address findings and strengthen internal controls.Process Improvement & SystemsDevelop, implement, and maintain comprehensive payroll standard operating procedures.Evaluate payroll workflows and systems to improve efficiency, automation, and compliance.Lead or support payroll system implementations, upgrades, and process redesign initiatives.Supervise, mentor,



and develop payroll staff to ensure technical excellence and accountability.Foster a culture of accuracy, continuous improvement, and service orientation.Build strong consultative relationships with leaders and staff across the organization.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or equivalent certification strongly preferred.Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible payroll leadership experience in a high-volume, highly regulated environment.Advanced knowledge of California wage and hour laws; multi-state payroll experience preferred.Proven experience supporting or leading payroll audits (tax, wage and hour, benefits, retirement, workers’ compensation, governmental).Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and enterprise payroll/timekeeping systems (UKG experience preferred).Experience with payroll system implementations or major process improvements.Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop staff.High integrity and discretion with sensitive and confidential information.Ability to meet all applicable conditions of employment, including background and regulatory clearances.Standard business hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PMHybrid work environment with both remote and onsite responsibilitiesTypical office setting; minimal physical demandsPay range and compensation packageSalary Range: $125,000 – $140,000 annuallyCompetitive benefits package including retirement plan with employer contributionGenerous paid time off, including holidays, vacation, sick leave, and personal daysEmployee assistance program and wellness resourcesProfessional development and training opportunitiesInclusive, mission-aligned workplace cultureEqual Opportunity StatementWe are committed to diversity and inclusivity in our hiring practices.#J-18808-Ljbffr
