Course number and title: VCC360H5F South Asian Visual Culture

Topic description: Popular imagery from the Indian subcontinent is now increasingly visible in the global arena, particularly via the West's discovery of 'Bollywood.' But what have these images meant to South Asians themselves, what are their histories, what traditions and practices do they draw on? This course introduces key concepts for understanding South Asian visual culture and its multifaceted postcolonial modernity. Images examined include popular prints, film, photography, comic books, urban environments, advertisements, crafts, art, propaganda, rituals, television, and the internet.

Estimated TA support: 1 TA grader approx 60 hours

Sessional dates of appointment: Sept 8 - Dec 8, 2026

$55.25 per hour + 4% vacation pay

Minimum qualifications: Graduate degrees in Cinema Studies or Art History is desired. Previous TA experience in a VCC course will be preferred.

Description of duties: (May include but are not limited to): Student and course instructor contact, grading, invigilating, and other clerical duties.
