Kay Meek Arts Centre is a performing arts venue in the heart of West Vancouver. Every year KMAC presents a season of 80 concerts, plays, dance performances, films and other special events in the 500-seat Grosvenor Theatre and the intimate McEwen Studio. When not being used for its own presentations, the Kay Meek Arts Centre facilities are available for rental to arts and community groups, including the West Vancouver School District (SD45). This combination of hosted presentations and community rentals translates into more than 300 performances annually.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Technical Director (TD) oversees all technical aspects of performing arts productions and events within the 500-seat Mainstage Grosvenor Theatre, the 100-seat McEwen Theatre and other spaces. The TD must have strong knowledge of various production techniques including sound, lighting, projection, stage management, and rigging, as well as collaborative team leadership experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Operations Management

Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the venue and the maintenance of all theatre facilities

Advises and determines the necessary technical supports and associated costs for all events and performances presented across the venue

Oversees advance information and communications on all KMAC Host presentations and rental events

Oversees the design of lighting and sound systems; consults and advises visiting guest designers and touring crews on all technical matters





Conducts orientation and training to facility renters and other external users in safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations as required

Acts as Technician/Operator for events as required

Administration and Leadership

In collaboration with the Executive Director, develops and maintains budgets for all technical, production and maintenance requirements

Supervises, schedules and trains all technical staff in the use of lighting, sound rigging equipment and communications equipment; approves staff payroll

Makes recommendations regarding capital purchases of theatre equipment and long-term maintenance requirements

Facility Management

Responsible for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of venue infrastructure and grounds including IT systems, including scheduling of necessary maintenance and cleaning requirements, including preventive maintenance and repairs/replacement as required and within budgetary constraints

In collaboration with the Executive Director, develops costed implementation planning for future-proof capacity including capital purchases of theatre equipment and the long-term maintenance

Implements and updates the Fire/Safety plan with all required parties; oversees training for staff and volunteers to implement the Fire/Safety plan

Maintains all Health and Safety requirements including required first aid facilities

Oversees onsite IT support, security and maintenance for office equipment IT and servers.



Acts as point of contact for IT support or repairs as needed

Requirements and Qualifications

5+ years of related experience as a technician, production manager and/or Technical Director including 2+ years experience in a supervisory role;

Post-secondary training in a related field; commensurate experience may be considered

Experience and strong knowledge of sound, lighting, rigging and stage management within a wide range of professional performing arts disciplines including music (all genres), theatre, dance and other events.

Experience in expenses monitoring and working within budgetary constraints

Proven proficiency in computer and IT skills including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, qLab, ETC Eos, and other relevant event-based technical software

Experience working with a range of clients from professional artists;

Experience working in a rental venue; working with community partners and youth/students an asset

LPEC certification

Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle

Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is $80,000-$95,000 per annum (based on experience) over a 40-hour week and includes a comprehensive benefits package. This is primarily an in-person position but there is an opportunity for adaptable and hybrid work.
