Job Purpose The Early Childhood Educator supports the cognitive, emotional, social and physical development of children through a structured, developmentally appropriate learning environment for children ages 0–6 years. This position is currently primarily assigned to the Toddler Program but may support other childcare programs based on operational and programming needs. The Early Childhood Educator works under the guidance and supervision of the Childcare Centre Supervisor to support the safe, smooth and effective operation of the centre.
Duties and Responsibilities Program and Child Support Applies a learn-through-play and teacher-directed educational approach to support the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of children ages 0–35 months, 3–5 years and/or multi-age groups depending on program placement.
Plans, develops and implements developmentally appropriate activities that integrate learning and community, adapting activities to meet the individual learning needs of each child.
Works collaboratively with other Early Childhood Educators on projects, activities and crafts related to the program, including lesson planning and delivery.
Assists in the supervision of children and supports the development of life skills and participation in daily activities.
Maintains a safe and supportive environment and provides appropriate supervision of children.
Assesses and monitors each child’s development in collaboration with the Childcare Centre Supervisor and maintains regular communication with parents and caregivers.
Provides classroom and program support as required based on the needs of the childcare centre.
Other Duties Assists with the preparation, cooking and clean-up of snacks and lunches provided to children.
Assists with daily and weekly cleaning and sanitization of the centre.
Contributes to the Early Childhood Education program calendar.
Participates in staff meetings, training and professional development as required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Ideal Qualifications & Experience Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certification.
Infant Toddler Educator (ITE) Certification is preferred.
Special Needs Educator Certification may also be considered.
Applicants who are actively working toward their ECE certification and have completed at least half of their program may be considered where a Letter of Permission can be obtained.
Routine immunizations according to the BC immunization schedule are recommended.
Responsible Adult 20-hour course is required and must be completed prior to working directly with children.
SFN will cover the cost of the course for successful candidates who require it.
Valid Child Safe Certificate or willingness to obtain.
Provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of Saulteau First Nations community, including history, traditions and culture, is an asset.
Ability to work as part of a team and successfully interact with a variety of personality types.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality when handling information.
Work Conditions Work is performed primarily in the childcare centre.
This position is currently primarily assigned to the Toddler Program but may be assigned to other childcare programs depending on operational and programming needs.
Outdoor supervision of children is required, weather permitting.
Travel may be required within Saulteau First Nations and surrounding communities.
Travel outside the community may be required for meetings or training.
Lifting or moving up to 40 lbs may be required.
