The Planning & Scheduling Manager is responsible for leading the planning, scheduling, and work management functions to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations. This role oversees the development and execution of maintenance and operational schedules, ensures effective resource utilization, and drives continuous improvement initiatives to maximize equipment reliability, productivity, and operational performance
.The Planning & Scheduling Manager collaborates closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Contractor Management teams to ensure work is planned, prioritized, and executed efficiently while meeting safety, environmental, and business objectives
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Work Management
Lead the maintenance planning and scheduling team in the development of short-term, weekly, and long-term work plans
Establish and maintain effective work management processes and standards
Ensure all maintenance and shutdown activities are properly scoped, planned, and scheduled
Monitor work order backlog and prioritize activities based on risk, reliability, and operational requirements
Coordinate labour, materials, tools, equipment, and contractor resources to support scheduled work
Scheduling & Execution
Develop integrated maintenance and operational schedules that align with production targets and business priorities
Facilitate weekly and daily scheduling meetings with key stakeholders
Monitor schedule compliance and identify opportunities to improve execution performance
Optimize resource allocation to maximize workforce productivity and equipment availability
Support turnaround, outage, and shutdown planning activity
Reliability & Continuous Improvement
Partner with Reliability and Engineering teams to improve asset performance and maintenance effectiveness
Analyze maintenance performance metrics and identify improvement opportunities
Implement best practices in planning, scheduling, and asset management
Drive process improvements that enhance safety, reliability, and operational efficiency
Support root cause investigations and corrective action implementation
Leadership & Team Development
Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to planning and scheduling personnel
Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvements
Establish performance objectives and development plans for team members
Promote knowledge sharing and adherence to company procedures and stand
Reporting & Performance Management
Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) including
Schedule compliance
Work order backlog
Labour productivity
Maintenance costs
Planned versus reactive work
Prepare reports and recommendations for site leadership
Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and resource planning activities
Qualifications
Education with Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Management, Business, Trades Technology, or a related field
Professional designation (P.Eng., PMP, or related certification) is considered an asset
8+ years of experience in maintenance planning, scheduling, operations, reliability, or asset management
10+ years of leadership or supervisory experience
Experience in industrial operations, mining, manufacturing, energy, chemical processing, or related industries
Experience leading turnaround, outage, or shutdown planning activities
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of maintenance and reliability principles
Experience with CMMS and ERP systems (SAP, IBM Maximo, or similar)
Proficiency with scheduling and planning tools
Robust analytical, budgeting, and reporting capabilities
Knowledge of Alberta occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations
