Job Summary & Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an integral member of the Laboratory team the Charge Medical Laboratory Technologist Transfusion Medicine responsibilities include:

Participating in technical, professional, and quality in-services and education

Participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/educational activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services.

Creating and editing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), applicable forms and supporting documents

Comprehensive knowledge of all SOPs, equipment and relevant consumables and reagents, etc.

Knowledgeable in completing on-line forms for External Testing proficiencies including C.A.P. and Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (formerly IQMH) P performing laboratory procedures for specific discipline(s) and functions and ensuring the completion of assigned workload.

Managing workload, practices and procedures of department; establishes priorities, work standards, develop plans, bench duties assignments/reassignments, resolving technical, clinical, workflow issues

Building working relationships with vendors

Provides recommendations for service agreements renewals, test menu additions, equipment replacement and/or additions

operating,



troubleshooting and maintaining cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area; preparing written and electronic reports required to document procedures and test results; participating in teaching, educational, safety and quality improvement programs.

observing and understanding hospital policies and procedures.

adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality.

performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested.

performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.

The above responsibilities are not to be considered all-inclusive; may be assigned other related duties in the interest of efficient operations of RVH or effective patient care.

SKILLS/ABILITES:

Demonstrated knowledge of Accreditation Canada - Diagnostics program preferred

Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies within the field.

Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office.

Demonstrated professionalism, interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors.

Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong teaching skills required

Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks at a time in a cost-effective manner.

Effective time management skills, ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others

Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgment.

Demonstrated commitment to excellent attendance and schedule flexibility.

Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and performing mandatory reviews.

Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgment.

Demonstrated excellent conflict resolution and change management skills; able to motivate and maintain objectivity.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
General certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post‑secondary institute.

Certification through the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).

Registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.

Previous leadership in a Charge role or experience leading a team in a project or initiative preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum five (5) years recent (within past three (3) years) laboratory experience in Transfusion Medicine required.

Demonstrated ability to develop skill and knowledge in Transfusion Medicine through continuing education essential.

Experience with current instrumentation/automation in Transfusion Medicine an asset.

General knowledge of all areas of the laboratory preferred.

General knowledge of the theory and practices of applicable laboratories procedures and equipment required.

Meditech and LIS knowledge and experience an asset

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION:
Current registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.

Participation in professional committees, networks recommended.
