The Mission Environmental Stewardship Society (MESS) is seeking a community-minded and environmentally passionate Program Assistant to support our events, outreach initiatives, and programming. The ideal candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills. Experience with volunteer-based or non-profit organizations is an asset.Mission Environmental Stewardship Society (MESS) is a dedicated non-profit organisation committed to preventing and removing littered and illegally dumped waste from the streets, parks, trails and waterways of Mission, BC. MESS has been present in the community of Mission for 30 years. Through comprehensive waste diversion and anti-litter programming, MESS coordinates the removal of over 10,000lbs of littered waste and manages hundreds of volunteers annually.This part-time position requires 40-50 hours per month (approximately 10-15 hours per week) through the end of April. After April, hours will adjust based on the organization's event schedule. The role offers flexibility but requires some weekend work at events during the spring, summer, and fall. Attendance at these events is non-negotiable. While knowledge of our organization, programs, and volunteer work is preferred, it is not required. This is a hybrid position, with some remote work.The position is guaranteed through December 31st, with the potential for extension and begins March 16th, 2026.EVENT DUTIES:Assist in organizing Mission Earth Fest 2026: Mission's Earth Day Celebration. Plan activities and coordinate volunteers. Must be available for the event on Saturday, April 26th, 2025 .Assist the Executive Director with event setups located in Mission,
including but not limited to group litter cleanups and community outreach events. Helping with setup and takedown of the popup tent, tables, chairs, signage, etc. and organizing volunteers during group cleanups.Assist with transportation of equipment, supplies, and food to and from eventsWork directly with the public, including children, to answer questions regarding programs, volunteering, and upcoming eventsPromote education and awareness regarding the impact of litter and illegal dumpingPromote the overall goal of reducing litter and dumping in the Mission CommunityCoordinate equipment, supplies, and volunteer sign-in at eventsAssist with food and beverages for volunteers if applicable at the eventMaintaining a positive relationship and communication with volunteersConduct safety orientations to volunteers & participate in outdoor community cleanupsPhotography of eventsDeliver our youth programming and managing registrations including keeping a participant count & statistical dataAttend public outreach events such as at the Farmer's Market or local festivalsRELEVANT BACKGROUND, EDUCATION, OR WORK EXPERIENCE:Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditionsExperience with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, PowerPoint,
Excel)Effective communication and organizational skillsSelf-motivated and able to work independentlyCommunity-oriented with a strong environmental focus, particularly in relation to litter and illegal dumpingKnowledge of Mission community and MESS programs is preferredVolunteer experience is an asset but not requiredSocial Media experience (Facebook, Instagram) is an assetComfortable speaking in public to groups of up to 60 peopleAbility to pass a criminal background check (required for working with children)Must have own transportation and a valid driver's license (some work may take place in remote areas of Mission without public transportation access)Must enjoy working with children and be comfortable in that environmentMission Environmental Stewardship Society is fully committed to abiding by all equal chance employment standards.
