Position Overview:

Heritage Skills Development Centre is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Part-Time Addictions Counsellor to join our team. The successful candidate will play a key role in providing culturally safe, client-centered care and support to individuals with lived and living experiences of substance use. In collaboration with the project team, the Addictions Counsellor will offer counseling, care coordination, and harm reduction services to individuals at risk of overdose, with a focus on reducing substance use-related harm in the community.

This role involves developing and maintaining solid partnerships with community organizations and offering integrated care and support that promotes recovery, empowerment, and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

- Screening and Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments to identify individual needs, inform clinical decision‑making, and ensure they receive the most suitable interventions and treatment options for their recovery.
- Counseling and Support: Provide addiction counseling in both group and individual settings, ensuring clients receive compassionate, relevant, and effective support tailored to their unique needs.
- Deliver evidence‑based treatment interventions to support individuals experiencing substance use challenges and related concerns
- Care Coordination: Support clients in navigating and accessing community resources, coordinating referrals to external services, and providing ongoing support throughout their recovery journey, to ensure they remain connected and supported at every stage.
- Harm Reduction and Education: Promote harm reduction strategies/ practices by offering clear education, practical guidance, and supportive interventions for individuals at risk of overdose or other substance‑related harms,



empowering them to make safer and more informed choices
- Peer Support Programs: Assist in planning, delivering, and facilitating peer support training and weekly drop‑in workshops, fostering a welcoming and supportive space that empowers individuals throughout their recovery.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: Develop and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations to enhance coordinated client care and broaden access to recovery services.
- The Addictions Counsellor will also lead workshops and group sessions, delivering education, guidance and support to participants in recovery while fostering a community connection and promoting healing through shared experiences.

Qualifications:

- Education: A Post Secondary degree in a relevant health-related field (e.g., Psychology, Social Work, or Nursing), clinical psychology or post-graduate training in addiction counseling with relevant experience
- Experience: At least three years of relevant experience delivering addiction‑related services, including individual client support and group facilitation, with a focus on working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders.
- Skills and Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of addiction treatment models, harm reduction approaches, and evidence‑based intervention strategies, with the skill to apply these effectively across diverse client situations.
- Skilled in conducting comprehensive clinical assessments,



providing empathetic and supportive counseling, and developing individualized treatment plans that align with each client’s unique needs and goals.
- Ability to provide care and support within a client‑centered framework, honoring cultural diversity and responding sensitively to each individual's unique backgrounds, identities, and lived experience.
- Knowledge of key legislation, including the Health Care Consent Act, the Mental Health Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act, with the ability to apply these frameworks appropriately in clinical and community‑based settings.
- Strong clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and decision‑making abilities that support effective assessment and response to complex client needs, ensuring care that is thoughtful, informed, and centered on the individual.
- Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under pressure and adapt smoothly within fast‑paced environments, consistently maintaining focus, flexibility, and sound judgment in various circumstances.
- Compassionate, non‑judgmental, and approachable, with a strong dedication to supporting individuals as they navigate substance use challenges and work toward meaningful , sustained recovery.
- Collaborative and team- oriented, with strong communication and interpersonal skills, that support positive working relationships and contribute to a cohesive, client‑focused team environment.
- Able to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration with team members and external partners, ensuring seamless communication, shared priorities, and consistent support across all areas of service delivery.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Work Location: In person
