YOUR OPPORTUNITY The Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences is dedicated to the delivery of medical and educational training, tertiary care and research for the eye care needs of society, through the five affiliated hospitals, the Kensington Eye Institute, and the community-based teaching hospitals. We shape the future for high quality patient care by educating and mentoring the next generation of clinicians, teachers and scientists.
As Business Manager, you will work closely with the Department Chair in implementing an effective infrastructure and accomplishing the teaching and research priorities of our department. You will be adept at leading and operationalizing our department’s vision through the effective management of all administrative functions, namely finance, human resources, special projects, and space planning and facilities management. Your strong financial acumen and proven ability to navigate and influence within complex organizational structures will help to advance our academic priorities and raise our national and international profile.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
University degree in business administration, economics, and/or financial management, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum five years of progressive experience in administrative, financial and human resource management in an academic workplace, particularly with funding organizations or large multi-user core facilities
Successful experience managing, leading, and mentoring staff, preferably in a unionized environment
Strong financial acumen, including budget planning,
and implementing short and long-term financial and operational plans and systems
Extensive experience managing complex and multi-stakeholder projects, including leading, organizing and tracking project outcomes, preferably in a university setting
Significant communications experience with demonstrated success in implementing an integrated communication strategy
Experience in research administration, including managing grant proposal processes and reporting in a health-related or research institution, with a record of successful performance
Knowledge of the University’s Administrative Management System (AMS), including the Financial Information System (FIS), Research Information System (RIS), Human Resources Information System (HRIS), or a similar large enterprise system
Knowledge of the research funding environment and expectations of grant/contract administration, e.g. federal Tri-Agency policies & guidelines
Strong research, writing, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure
Familiarity with laboratory-based research and educational programs as well as clinical trials and database
Demonstrated ability to plan and execute complex projects and manage conflicting priorities while working toward tight deadlines
Ability to write concise and informative reports and proposals. Ability to understand a complex relational database on research funding
Ability to work under pressure with shifting priorities; high degree of political acuity and judgement; flexibility and problem-solving orientation
Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills
Strong decision-making skills; superior planning and project management skills with a focus on executing and competing tasks under pressure and within deadlines
Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with senior administrators in a manner that facilitates cooperation and consensus building
