CAD Drafter – Door & Storefront Systems

Avro Aluminum is looking for a capable and motivated CAD Drafter to support our growing aluminum door and storefront division.

The drafting itself is not overly complicated. What is important to us is that the successful candidate has a strong foundation in the core drafting skills, is organized and dependable, takes pride in producing accurate work, and is willing to learn.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable taking on new challenges, asking questions when necessary, accepting constructive feedback, and learning from mistakes.

Experience in the fenestration, architectural aluminum, storefront, curtain wall, window, or commercial door industry would be a strong asset.

Primary Responsibilities The CAD Drafter will be responsible for:

- Preparing accurate shop drawings for aluminum door and storefront orders.
- Preparing fabrication drawings used by our manufacturing team.
- Developing and maintaining standard door and storefront details.
- Producing and maintaining accurate AutoCAD drawings for aluminum extrusions, hardware, glazing, fasteners, and assemblies.
- Working with the Avro Project Coordinator to move orders efficiently from design and approval through fabrication.
- Maintaining organized CAD files, drawing standards, part numbers, revisions, and technical documentation.
- Reviewing drawings for accuracy and completeness before they are released to production.
- Updating drawings based on manufacturing feedback, product changes, and field experience.
- Helping develop Bills of Materials (BOMs) for door and storefront assemblies.
- Supporting the continued development of Avro's door and storefront product catalogues.
- Assisting with the development and documentation of new aluminum extrusion profiles.
- Reviewing extrusion die drawings and comparing extrusion samples against approved drawings.
- Supporting the continued development of the systems and documentation required for efficient door and storefront manufacturing.

AutoCAD Skills

Strong AutoCAD competency is important for this position.

The successful candidate should be comfortable with:

- Accurate 2D drafting.
- Blocks and dynamic blocks.
- Layers, attributes, external references, templates, and drawing standards.
- Parametric drawing techniques.
- Creating drawings that can be reused efficiently across multiple product configurations.
- Basic to strong 3D modelling skills.

Expert-level knowledge in every area is not required on day one. However, the candidate must have a solid foundation and the ability and willingness to develop more advanced skills as the position evolves.

Excel & Data Management

Strong Excel skills are also important.

The candidate should be comfortable using Excel to organize and maintain:

- Part lists
- Bills of Materials
- Product information
- Hardware information
- Drawing registers
- Revision information
- Manufacturing data

The ability to organize information logically and accurately is as important as drafting ability.

Product & Manufacturing Development

This position will involve more than producing individual shop drawings.

Avro is continuing to develop the technical infrastructure supporting our door and storefront business. The successful candidate will work with the Project Coordinator and management to improve and maintain:

- Standard product drawings
- Fabrication drawings
- Product catalogues
- Extrusion libraries
- Hardware libraries
- Fastener information
- Bills of Materials
- Drawing standards
- Part-number systems
- Revision control
- Manufacturing documentation
- Product configurator information

Over time, the drafter will develop a strong understanding of how the drawings, BOMs, catalogue information, hardware, extrusions, and manufacturing processes all relate to one another.

Extrusion & Die Development

Experience with aluminum extrusion development is an asset but is not mandatory.

The role may include

- Preparing drawings for new aluminum extrusion profiles.
- Reviewing extrusion die drawings supplied by die manufacturers.
- Checking dimensions and tolerances.
- Comparing first-run extrusion samples against approved drawings.
- Documenting required corrections.
- Maintaining approved extrusion drawings and revisions.

A willingness to learn this process is more important than already knowing every aspect of extrusion die development.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on position within a growing part of Avro Aluminum's business.

The successful candidate will initially focus on shop drawings and fabrication drawings while gradually becoming involved in product development, catalogues, extrusion development, BOMs, manufacturing standards, and other systems supporting the door and storefront division.

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated CAD Drafter with a focus on Door & Storefront Systems to join our innovative team. In this role, you will create accurate and detailed technical drawings for doors, storefronts, and related systems, supporting project execution from concept through construction. Your expertise in drafting software and construction processes will be essential in delivering accurate designs that meet client specifications and industry standards.

Duties

- Develop detailed 2D CAD drawings for door and storefront systems using AutoCAD and Revit software.
- Create schematics, layouts, and assembly drawings that clearly communicate design intent.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to refine designs based on project requirements.
- Utilize SketchUp, NavisWorks, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or SolidWorks to visualize concepts and perform clash detection.
- Review construction documents to ensure accuracy, compliance with codes, and constructability.
- Assist in preparing presentation materials including 2D animations to illustrate design features.
- Support site visits by providing technical drawings and modifications as needed during construction phases.

Qualifications

- Proven experience in CAD drafting within the construction or architectural industry, specifically with doors or storefront systems preferred.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD is required; experience with Revit, SketchUp, NavisWorks, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or SolidWorks is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of schematics, technical drafting standards, and construction processes.
- Knowledge of building codes, safety standards, and industry best practices related to doors and storefront systems.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate and clear technical drawings.
- Prior experience working on projects involving construction or renovation is a plus.
- Basic familiarity with 2D animation tools is an advantage for creating visual presentations.
