Reporting to the Manager of Individual Advocacy Services, the Child and Youth Advocacy Specialist provides advocacy services to the children and youth of Nunavut and assumes a lead role in the resolution of issues, which are often complex and sensitive in nature. The incumbent ensures that advocacy services are provided in a timely fashion and are delivered in manner that aligns with Inuit societal values, the Representative for Children and Youth Act (RCYA) and office policies and procedures. This position contributes to the continual evaluation and improvement of advocacy services for the children and youth of Nunavut.

Responsibilities The Child and Youth Advocacy Specialist provides critical support to children, youth, and their families as well as services providers, Government of Nunavut departments and designated authorities. The position holds a great deal of responsibility and is directly accountable for assisting children and youth through difficult and challenging situations. The main responsibilities are but are not limited to:

- Providing direct advocacy support to children, youth, and their families through difficult and challenging situations, with accountability for outcomes that may be significant to an individual’s life and well-being.

- Working directly with GN departments, designated authorities, and service providers responsible for delivering services to children and youth under the RCYA.

- Developing recommendations that may lead to public policy and programmatic changes within departments and designated authorities.





- Maintaining current knowledge of the programs, services, policy, and legislation affecting children and youth across multiple sectors.

- Engaging a wide range of community stakeholder groups on behalf of the Office.

- Assisting in the creation and delivery of child rights resources, awareness, and engagement activities across the territory, including workshops, presentations, information booths, and informational materials.

- Contributing to the continual evaluation and improvement of the Office’s advocacy services.

Qualifications The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through:

- A recognized university degree in Social Work or related field.
- Three [3] years of experience in a service field that provided direct service to children and youth.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a transparent Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
