Reporting to the Director, Public Safety Programs, the Community Safety and Policing Specialist designs, develops, implements, and evaluates justice policies and programs related to community safety and policing across Nunavut. The position leads community safety initiatives that foster community safety partnerships, engage citizens and communities in territorial policing, and support community safety planning. Working collaboratively with government departments, municipalities, Inuit Organizations, the RCMP, and community partners, the position provides policy advice, develops programs and strategic initiatives, coordinates policing priorities, and supports evidence-based approaches to community safety, crime prevention, and public safety throughout Nunavut.
Responsibilities The Community Safety and Policing Specialist’s main responsibilities, include, but are not limited to:
- Leading the creation of Community Safety Partnerships, including the research, development, and design of community-based strategies incorporating input from government agencies and key stakeholders;
- Developing partnerships with government agencies, municipalities, RCMP, Inuit Organizations, and community groups in support of community safety, crime prevention, and community policing strategies;
- Providing policy analysis, program advice, logistical support,
and coordination for the Nunavut Police Council in support of community engagement and territorial policing priorities;
- Monitoring, analyzing, and providing advice to senior officials on territorial policing priorities and their implementation;
- Participating in national and territorial working groups to support research and develop evidence-based practices for community policing and crime prevention;
- Identifying, formulating, and recommending policy, program, and statutory alternatives related to community policing and crime prevention, and prepare briefing notes, Cabinet submissions, reports, strategy documents, and work plans;
- Negotiating funding agreements, prepare work plans and contract terms and conditions, and monitor contracts and funding agreements supporting community safety initiatives;
- Managing project budgets through budget development, expenditure monitoring, and financial reporting to support approved community safety and policing initiatives.
Qualifications The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position would be attained through:
- Completion of a recognized undergraduate degree in Social Sciences or a related field;
- Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement or a related field;
- Experience in policy work and policy-related techniques, and experience writing briefing materials and analytical reports are also required.
This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French.

Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural workplace are also considered assets.
