OMVIC currently has a vacancy for a one-year contract Compliance Inspector position (Durham West/Scarborough area).

Who is OMVIC?

OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) is Ontario’s vehicle sales regulator. OMVIC enforces the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act and other consumer protection statutes for the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement. OMVIC’s mandate and role is to maintain a fair and informed marketplace by protecting the rights of consumers, enhancing industry professionalism, and ensuring fair, honest, and open competition for registered motor vehicle dealers.

This is achieved by maintaining strict dealer/salesperson registration requirements; inspecting all Ontario dealers (recent and used); providing free complaint handling to consumers; developing/delivering consumer and dealer education/awareness programs; and investigating and prosecuting industry non-compliance and illegal sales (curbsiding). Position information:

- Reports to: Manager, Inspections
- Salary Range: $70,000 - $90,000 annually
- Work Model: Remote - All duties carried out remotely must be completed from the employee’s approved home office within Ontario.

Role Summary:

The Compliance Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Motor Vehicle Dealer Act 2002 (MVDA) and certain aspects of the Consumer Protection Act by all registered dealerships and salespersons in Ontario.

Responsibilities:





- Examine transactions and documents for compliance, educate dealers about regulatory expectations and legislation applicable to dealer’s business model and provide guidance on compliance policies.
- Recommend best practices for dealership governance, document inspections, summarize findings, and follow up on previous inspections.
- Identify practices of failure to disclose information or odometer tampering and review advertising for violations or misleading content.
- Testify at Court and Licence Appeal Tribunal, respond to complex inquiries about consumer entitlements and legislation.
- Provide consultative advice to OMVIC staff, assist with complex registration applications, monitor compliance with Registrar’s Terms and Conditions.
- Assist investigators as needed, identify and analyze emerging issues and trends, develop recommendations to resolve inspection-related problems, stay updated on relevant legislation and industry trends and maintain knowledge of consumer fraud practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in a field related to one or more of the following: criminology, law, social science, political science, psychology, or public administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Minimum of 2 to 4 years of experience, preferably in regulatory law, auditing, and/or inspections within public or regulatory sectors.
- Experience in regulatory compliance, inspections, accounting, auditing, or law enforcement.
- Knowledge of inspection practices, evidence collection, and legislation interpretation (MVDA 2002, Consumer Protection Act).
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead inspections, conduct interviews,



and work independently or as part of a team.
- Proficiency with computer applications (Microsoft Office) and data analysis techniques.
- Familiarity with motor vehicle dealership environment is an asset.
- Valid class ‘G’ driver’s license, own a vehicle with business coverage insurance, and willingness to travel.
- Position requires inspections to be conducted in-person in the assigned region.
- Reside within 25-40 kms of the Durham West - Scarborough Territory to ensure effective coverage and local presence.
- Multilingual skills are considered an asset.
