Toronto

About Butterfield & Robinson For more than 60 years, Butterfield & Robinson (B&R;) has been designing and delivering extraordinary active travel experiences for discerning travellers around the globe. Founded in Canada and proudly independent, B&R; has built its reputation on blending adventure with luxury, pairing the world’s most inspiring destinations with unmatched hospitality, attention to detail, and cultural immersion.

Why This Role Matters The Controller is accountable for the integrity of B&R;'s financial operations. This role translates strategic direction into the systems, controls, and team that keep B&R;’s books accurate, financial insights visible, and the close deadlines on schedule.

Position Overview

As Controller, you lead the Finance team day to day, directly managing our financial analysts. Reporting to the CFO, and supporting the management team, you own the systems and data behind our financial reporting and steward the company's financial records and internal controls.

This is not a purely compliance-focused role. Financial controls and reporting are foundational, but the real opportunity is financial insight, process and AI-driven optimization, and being a visible business partner across departments. You own our core systems hands-on, including Business Central, our tour operations platform, and expense management software, in addition to acting as finance's partner to our technology team as we invest further in automation.

The ideal candidate is a designated accountant who is genuinely tech- and AI-forward, thrives in a collaborative workplace, and brings the energy and curiosity to grow with B&R; over the long term. You build systems as readily as you run them, and you want a seat close to the action.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Reporting

- Own the overall financial reporting of B&R;, including month-end and year-end entries, financial statements, and management reports.
- Steward company assets through robust internal controls and disciplined budget monitoring, maintaining and improving financial procedures and controls.
- Prepare departmental budgets and cash forecasts; monitor, analyze, and maintain general ledger accounts.
- Co-ordinate year-end audits with external auditors.
- Manage treasury, cash flow, and accounts payable functions.
- Own trip-level cost accrual and profitability reporting with the operations team, creating margin visibility by trip and segment.

- Own intercompany elimination and consolidation logic between B&R; Inc. (Canada, USD) and B&R; France (EUR).
- Maintain TICO trust reporting and reserve compliance.

Business Partnership & Strategic Contribution

- Help develop and actively support the company's strategic plans.
- Monitor company financial performance, proactively surfacing insights, risks, and opportunities to management.
- Identify cost-saving and overhead reduction opportunities across the business.
- Build working relationships across departments to provide meaningful financial guidance.
- Support the CFO in executing the company's financial plan, including ad hoc analysis and financial modelling.

Finance Systems & Technology Ownership

- Act as finance's hands-on system owner for financial data and reporting logic, administering workflows and protecting data integrity.
- Champion AI tools, automation, and modern financial technology to improve the accuracy, speed, and scalability of accounting.
- Partner with B&R;'s technology function on finance's data requirements for integrations across our ERP, tour operations, and payment platforms.
- Replace manual processes such as reconciliations and revenue adjustments with documented, auditable workflows.
- Build and maintain KPI and trip-profitability dashboards that give leadership self-serve visibility in place of manual reporting.

Team Leadership & Development

- Directly manage B&R;'s finance team day to day, including workload, priorities, and mentorship.
- Conduct performance reviews, monitor attendance and vacation, and identify training opportunities.
- Adhere to Ethical Practices and Code of Conduct as required by professional designation.
- Foster a culture of accountability, precision, and continuous improvement within the Finance team.

- Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- CPA designation required.
- Five+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, including three in a senior or management role.
- Strong financial reporting skills with experience managing month-end,

year-end, and audit processes in a multi-entity environment.
- Working knowledge of developing and maintaining annual forecasts and cash flow models.
- Strong understanding of foreign exchange accounting; experience in a multi-currency environment.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and financial reporting tools; experience with Microsoft Business Central is a strong asset.
- Demonstrable interest in and aptitude for AI tools, financial automation, and emerging technology.
- Proficiency with Power BI or similar; comfort turning financial data into dashboards non-finance stakeholders can use.
- Experience partnering with technology teams on integrations and data flows (API or data-contract literacy) is an asset.
- Experience with job costing, trip-level costing, or unit economics in a project- or trip-based business is a strong asset.
- Excellent MS Excel skills; broader proficiency with the Microsoft 365 suite.
- Experience in the travel, hospitality, or services industry is an asset.

- Skills and Characteristics
- Strong analytical thinker with a focus on problem solving and sound financial judgment.
- Hands-on and operationally oriented; thrives in a change-intensive, entrepreneurial environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
- Solid interpersonal, team-building, and managerial aptitude.
- Performs well under pressure, managing competing priorities and deadlines with accuracy and composure.
- High attention to detail without losing the big picture.
- Professional, discreet, and deeply accountable, with a deep appreciation for a global, creative, and collaborative work culture.
