Description:

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel & Director of the Office of Discipline Counsel and working as part of the University’s Office of Discipline Counsel the incumbent represents the Provost in academic discipline proceedings before the University Tribunal and provides legal advice and guidance to clients across the University on issues related to academic discipline. In doing so, the incumbent conducts legal analysis and research, and drafts and edits documents including letters, pleadings, affidavits, and factums.

The incumbent regularly prosecutes cases that are stressful and high stakes for the respondent students; as such, the incumbent is required to maintain a high standard of commitment to the integrity of the administration of justice as well as respect and care in their legal communication. The incumbent is assigned carriage of a high volume of cases. While the position has a high degree of independence, consultation and collaboration with other members of the Office of Discipline Counsel team is essential.

Qualifications Required:

I. EDUCATION:

A Bachelors of law degree (LL.B) or juris doctor (J.D.) degree. Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.

II. EXPERIENCE:





Minimum 4 years’ experience in legal practice with emphasis on administrative law and litigation or litigation management, with experience gained in a prosecution or professional regulation context required.

Experience drafting, analyzing and interpreting legal documents.

Experience with and knowledge of prosecutorial practices, the rules of evidence, procedural fairness, and the law concerning privilege and documentary disclosure. Familiarity and experience with the policies and practices of universities relating to administrative law and processes, and experience with higher education issues, University structure and governance an asset.

III. SKILLS:

Demonstrated strong oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced, high-volume workplace.

IV. OTHER:

Excellent tact, judgment and discretion. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Able to work cooperatively and collegially with internal and external contacts.
