Executive Vice President of Sales The Executive Vice President of Sales is the senior-most sales leader responsible for driving profitable growth by developing, implementing, leading, and scaling all sales and business development activities across the organization.
Role PurposeThis role owns the entire sales engine.
The EVP of Sales defines the vision for the sales organization, leads large-scale initiatives, and collaborates with other C-suite executives to drive business outcomes, ensuring alignment between sales strategies and the organization's long-term goals.
Core ResponsibilitiesStrategic Sales Leadership
- Develop and implement long-term sales strategies that align with the company's mission and business objectives.
- Participate actively in corporate strategic planning, sales strategy development, forecasting, sales resource planning, and budgeting.
- Set and meet assigned targets for profitable sales volume, market share, and other key financial performance objectives.
- Identify and capitalize on opportunities to expand into recent markets, regions, or customer segments.
Revenue and Performance Management
- Set and achieve revenue goals, ensuring sustainable growth and profitability.
- Establish individual sales goals and objectives, and prioritize critical performance measures for all sales positions across all sales channels, geographical markets, and personnel.
- Ensure all sales personnel are held accountable for assigned results.
- Analyze key performance metrics, such as revenue growth, quota attainment, and customer acquisition costs, to track success and identify areas for improvement.
Sales Organization Design and Operations
- Accountable for effective sales organization design, including sales job roles, sales channel design, and sales resource deployment.
- Oversee the development and refinement of sales processes, methodologies, and technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Manage and coordinate CRM across several functional areas.
- Lead organizational change initiatives within the sales function by continuously assessing the need for process or procedure change and championing change initiatives.
Team Leadership and Development
- Recruit, mentor, and manage senior sales leaders, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.
- Lead development initiatives impacting sales team members and provide stewardship of sales and sales management talent.
- Provide leadership to members of the sales team while fostering a culture of accountability, professional development, high-performance, and ethical behavior.
- Oversee recruitment, training, and development of the sales staff.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with marketing, product, and customer success teams to ensure alignment and a seamless customer journey.
- Collaborate with marketing to create impactful sales campaigns.
- Coordinate with other executives to align sales strategies with business objectives.
- Work to foster lasting relationships with existing customers as well as identifying new business opportunities in each market.
Key Account and Stakeholder Management
- Maintain relationships with major clients and oversee strategies to expand high-value accounts.
- Build and maintain relationships with key clients, partners, and stakeholders.
- Negotiate and close high-value contracts and agreements.
- Resolve escalated customer issues to ensure satisfaction and retention.
Financial Management and Governance
- Accountable for the overall sales budget as well as individual sales objectives by setting specific monthly, quarterly, or annual sales and profit margin goals.
- Proactively assesses existing sales support investments, including those in technology, marketing, training, and entertainment.
- Review and approve sales budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
- Develop pricing strategies and sales policies aligned with company goals.
Forecasting and Reporting
- Provide accurate sales forecasts and deliver comprehensive performance updates to stakeholders and board members.
- Develop, governs, and reports on the sales performance of the company.
- Provide regular sales performance updates to the CEO and board of directors.
- Analyze sales data and generate detailed performance reports.
Market Intelligence and Representation
- Conduct market research to keep abreast of industry trends and competition.
- Represent the company at industry events, trade shows, and conferences.
- Conduct data and statistical analysis to determine current market trends and public demands.
Typical Profile
- 18+ years of progressive sales leadership experience, with significant time in senior executive roles.
- Proven track record of scaling sales organizations and delivering sustained revenue growth.
- Strong expertise in sales strategy, organization design, and performance management.
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder-management, and communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or related field; MBA or advanced degree is a plus.
