Position Description

We are seeking a collaborative, relationship-focused First Nations Cultural (Education Liaison)to join our Indigenous Education team. This position plays a key role in strengthening partnerships with local First Nations while supporting culturally responsive educational experiences that honour Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning.

Working closely with First Nations governments, families, school teams, district staff, and community partners, the Coordinator supports the implementation of Local Education Agreements (LEAs), advances district Indigenous Education priorities, and helps remove barriers so First Nations students can thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally.

The Indigenous Cultural Coordinator (Education Liaison) will report to the Principal/Vice Principal of Indigenous Education and the Director of Instruction.

This position is from September 1, 2026. This position will be eight (8) hours per day 5 days a week, with some of those hours being outside of the regular scheduled school hours. The annual FTE for this position is 0.83.

Salary to be determined based on Education and Experience. The starting annual salary for this position is expected to be between $60,860.58 - $76,076.14.

This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for overtime and it is not part of a Union.

Work Year: 10 month (September 1 to June 30)

Hours: 40 hours/week, minimum 8 hours per day

Responsibilities

Grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, place-based learning, and the principles of Truth and Reconciliation, the Indigenous Cultural Coordinator (Education Liaison) will:

- Serve as cultural liaison between local First Nations Communities, students, parents, and school staff. Facilitate communication and collaboration to ensure cultural needs and perspectives are considered.
- Foster meaningful communication between schools, families, and First Nations regarding student attendance, achievement, engagement, and well-being.
- Support collaborative, strengths-based planning for First Nations learners alongside families, school teams, Indigenous Support Workers, counsellors, and community partners.

- Advocate for First Nation’s students, ensuring their unique needs are addressed, and they have access to resources and support.

- Coordinate meetings, school visits, community engagement opportunities, and culturally responsive programming.

- Organize cultural awareness programs, workshops, and events within schools/district to promote understanding and appreciation of First Nation cultures, history,



and traditions with an emphasis on local First Nation culture and knowledge.

- Build and maintain respectful relationships with local First Nations, including leadership, education departments, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, cultural advisors, and community partners.

- Assist in the organization and planning of district cultural events and career development events hosted by SD 60 Indigenous Education Department.
- Assist in the development and adaptation of educational resources that reflect Indigenous perspective and content, with an emphasis on local First Nation’s knowledge/culture, supporting teachers and students in their learning.

- Coordinate Indigenous Education initiatives including land-based learning, cultural programming, mentorship opportunities, and student engagement activities.

- Maintain an updated Indigenous Education pamphlet and website, create and distribute monthly newsletter.
- Apply for funding from diverse sources, including writing proposals and reports for grant applications.
- Assist in maintaining up-to-date First Nation student student statistics, finances and board report

- Support the collection, analysis, and reporting of student and program data to inform continuous improvement and fulfill district and partnership reporting requirements.
- Prepare reports, presentations, briefing notes, and communications while ensuring compliance with district policies, the School Act, FOIPPA, and LEA commitments.

- Collaborate with local First Nations communities to involve them in the educational process, seeking input into cultural programs

- Support the implementation, monitoring, and ongoing development of Local Education Agreements (LEAs).

- Offer training and professional development opportunities for educators and SD 60 staff to enhance their understanding of First Nations cultural and pedagogical practices.

- Assist in organizing and facilitating professional learning that strengthens cultural safety, reconciliation, and Indigenous Education practices across the district

Qualifications The successful applicant will possess:

- A preference for candidates with Indigenous heritage and has a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions and perspectives.
- 2 years post secondary education in Social Work, Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, and related experience. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
- Significant experience in Indigenous education, community engagement, or related fields, demonstrating a track record of advocacy for Indigenous students.




- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, parents, educational staff and community members.
- Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and the ability to foster inclusive and respectful environments.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills to plan and execute cultural events and programs.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing needs and circumstances within the educational system.
- Valid driver’s license as this position will require travel to schools and First Nations Communities.

- Ability to participate in cultural activities, professional learning, and land-based educational experiences.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required
