Job Overview
We are hiring a Senior Data Engineer for the Government of Alberta to support enterprise data modernization initiatives and the Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS) program. The successful candidate will design, develop, and operate secure, scalable, and reliable data solutions across Microsoft Azure.
This role focuses on building high-quality, analytics-ready datasets, enterprise data pipelines, data products, semantic layers, and integrations that support regulatory oversight, compliance monitoring, reporting, advanced analytics, and future AI use cases.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and implement scalable, secure, and high-performance data architectures on Microsoft Azure across cloud-native and hybrid environments.
- Design and develop reliable data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, integration, and downstream consumption.
- Lead data engineering solutions using Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2.
- Build and optimize enterprise-grade ETL/ELT workflows using Python, PySpark, and SQL.
- Manage and optimize data lakes and structured storage solutions while ensuring efficient access, governance, and scalability.
- Develop standardized, trusted, analytics-ready datasets and data products.

- Collaborate with business stakeholders and product owners to understand data product objectives, requirements, and success criteria.
- Integrate data from diverse source systems, including ServiceNow and geospatial systems, using APIs, connectors, and custom scripts.
- Develop robust data models and semantic layers supporting operational reporting, analytics, machine learning, and self-service consumption.
- Design data marts and data products for reporting, data science, and enterprise analytics.
- Support integration with Azure Synapse Analytics and Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Warehouse, and Semantic Models.
- Design and expose secure data services and APIs using Azure API Management.
- Data Governance, Security &
- Compliance
- Implement data governance practices including metadata management, data classification, lineage tracking, and data quality controls.
- Apply role-based access controls, encryption, data masking, and secure authentication mechanisms.
- Utilize Azure authentication approaches such as Service Principals and Managed Identities for secure pipeline and system integrations.
- Ensure data solutions comply with applicable privacy and regulatory standards, including FOIP and GDPR.
- Monitor data quality, reliability, security, scalability, and performance across the data platform.

- Operations
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize data pipelines and integrations.
- Build scalable solutions using Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Workflows, Jobs, Notebooks, and cluster management.
- Perform data cleansing, enrichment, transformation, and wrangling using Python, PySpark, and SQL.
- Use Git/GitHub for version control, collaborative development, code management, and integration with data engineering workflows.
- Ensure data engineering solutions are maintainable, reusable, scalable, and production-ready.

- Automation
- Use AI tools for code generation, data analysis, automation, testing, monitoring, documentation, and productivity enhancement.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools for code generation, optimization, and review.
- Design and curate high-quality datasets suitable for advanced analytics and future AI use cases.
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve data engineering processes.

- Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with business stakeholders, product owners, Data Architects, cross-functional technical teams, and other project stakeholders.
- Translate business and technical requirements into scalable data solutions.
- Collaborate with teams to create software applications and data products.

Required Skills & Experience –
- Must Have
- Experience designing analytics-ready, trusted datasets using technologies such as Power BI and Azure Synapse, including semantic layers, data marts, and data products.
- Strong experience with Git/GitHub for version control, collaborative development, code management, and data engineering workflows.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Azure services, including Azure Storage, Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, and Azure networking.
- Experience implementing secure authentication using Service Principals and Managed Identities.
- Strong programming experience with Python, PySpark, and SQL for enterprise ETL/ELT development, orchestration, transformation, and optimization.
- Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, Workflows, Jobs, Notebooks, and cluster management.
- Experience developing scalable data pipelines in large-scale cloud environments.
- Experience using AI for code generation, data analysis, automation, and productivity enhancement within data engineering workflows.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Hands-on experience performing business requirements analysis related to data manipulation, transformation, cleansing,
and wrangling.
- Strong technical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, including database design, optimization, and administration in enterprise environments.
- Experience integrating or extending data solutions using Azure Synapse Analytics and Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Warehouse, and Semantic Models.
- Experience building data products within the Government of Alberta cloud environment.
- Experience developing secure and scalable RESTful APIs for data exchange, including authentication, error handling, and real-time automation.
- Experience with Message Queueing Technologies, including ActiveMQ and Azure Service Bus, for scalable asynchronous communication.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop software applications and data products.

- Business Context The Government of Alberta is undertaking modernization initiatives that are transforming how ministry users collect, manage, analyze, and consume data as legacy systems transition to modern Data Management and Geospatial Platforms.
The Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS) is a Government of Alberta regulatory transformation initiative led by Environment and Protected Areas (EPA). DRAS is designed to modernize, digitize, and streamline environmental and natural resource regulatory processes across the complete regulatory lifecycle, from application and authorization through monitoring, compliance, remediation, and closure.
As DRAS continues to evolve, the volume, variety, and complexity of structured data are increasing. This position will provide dedicated data engineering expertise to ensure modernized data assets deliver tangible business value.
The Senior Data Engineer will build and operate reliable data pipelines, integrate diverse data sources, apply standardized transformations, enforce data quality and governance controls, and produce trusted analytics-ready datasets that support regulatory oversight, compliance monitoring, evidence-based decision-making, advanced analytics, and future AI initiatives.
