Rehabilitation and Education Program provides intensive daily rehabilitation to children with physical disabilities within a classroom setting. As part of the Rehabilitation &

Education team, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to assist in the activities of daily living, comfort and safety of the child/youth; supports them to participate in a variety of activities while they are attending the Rehab and Education program; and provides indirect services to support the overall provision of care within the program under supervision from a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) or regulated healthcare professional. Education Program operates in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and follows the school year schedule including planned breaks in the fall, winter, spring and summer; the HCA is not scheduled to work during school breaks or non-school days, except for summer camp programs. As the successful candidate, you will exhibit excellent communication skills and effective interpersonal skills, demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team, and be highly organized. You will demonstrate initiative, adaptability and flexibility to meet varying clinical and operational needs in accordance with the Health Professions Act.

As a Health Care Aide (HCA),



you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing.

Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals.

PLEASE NOTE: Until a new hire provides proof of HCA certification, they will be paid at the uncertified pay grade in accordance with the AUPE AUX Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications

Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.

Additional Required Qualifications

Adherence to the minimum competencies defined in the Alberta Health - Health Care Aide Competency Profile (2018). Certified as a Health Care Aide through a Government of Alberta licensed post-secondary institution using the Provincial Health Care Aide Curriculum. Registration with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (HCAs).

Minimum two (2) years experience working with children with disabilities in a therapeutic setting. Demonstrated knowledge of child development. Ability to do heavy lifting and demonstrate safe use of body mechanics and patient handling techniques on a daily basis to assist with ambulation, positioning, range of motion, exercises or transfer of equipment.

Demonstrated ability to transfer and lift children of varying ages and sizes. Knowledge and experience in neurological conditions, rehabilitative service, and transition support. Knowledge of computer applications.

BCLS-HCP certification.
