BLUBC Education Consulting provides academic tutoring, standardized test preparation, university planning, and educational consulting services to students and families. We are currently seeking an experienced High School English and AP English Teacher to join our academic team. This is a contract teaching position focused primarily on reading comprehension, academic and creative writing, literary analysis, English and American literature, Shakespeare, and AP English preparation.

The ideal candidate has substantial experience teaching secondary or university-level English and can help students become thoughtful readers, analytical writers, and confident communicators.

Responsibilities and Duties

- Teach English to students in Grades 8–12 through one-to-one lessons and small-group classes
- Plan and deliver lessons aligned with the BC English Language Arts curriculum and individual student needs
- Teach academic essay writing, including thesis development, organization, argumentation, textual evidence, style, grammar, and revision
- Strengthen students’ reading comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, and written communication skills
- Guide students in close reading and literary analysis across fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction
- Teach English and American literature, including Shakespeare and other major classical and contemporary works
- Support students with school assignments, essays, presentations, examinations, and long-term academic development
- Teach AP English Language and Composition and/or AP English Literature and Composition, where qualified
- Develop structured course outlines, lesson plans, assignments, assessments, and teaching materials
- Assign appropriate homework and provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback
- Monitor student progress and maintain accurate lesson and assessment records
- Communicate regularly with BLUBC education consultants regarding student performance, learning needs, and recommended next steps
- Create an engaging and intellectually stimulating learning environment
- Follow BLUBC’s teaching standards and student-support procedures

Required Qualifications

- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in English Literature, English Language, Writing, Education, or a closely related discipline
- Substantial experience teaching English, literature, reading, or writing to secondary school or university students
- Strong knowledge of literary analysis, academic writing, and effective writing instruction
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Ability to teach students how to develop, organize, support, and revise sophisticated written arguments
- Ability to explain complex literary concepts clearly and adapt instruction to different student levels
- Strong communication, organization,



and student-engagement skills
- Professional experience working with teenagers
- Ability to develop structured lessons and provide detailed feedback on student writing
- Availability to teach in person at our Vancouver locations
- Legal authorization to work in Canada

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

- A PhD in English Literature, English and American Literature, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, or a closely related field
- Professional experience as a published author, novelist, poet, playwright, literary critic, journalist, or established writer
- Current or previous experience teaching English at a Canadian or U.S. secondary school
- Current or previous experience teaching English literature, composition, rhetoric, or writing at a college or university
- Strong knowledge of the BC English Language Arts curriculum and provincial assessment expectations
- Experience teaching Shakespeare, English literature, American literature, and advanced literary analysis
- Experience teaching AP English Language and Composition and/or AP English Literature and Composition
- Experience preparing students for AP English examinations, including multiple-choice questions and Free-Response Questions
- Experience supporting students with advanced academic writing and university-level preparation
- An established collection of well-organized teaching materials, literary texts, writing exercises, assignments, and assessments
- Experience teaching both in person and online

Teaching Locations and Availability

We have two teaching locations: one on the UBC campus and one at 2083 Alma Street in Vancouver West. More than 80% of our classes are delivered in person at these locations.

Classes are generally scheduled during weekday afternoons and evenings and on weekends. Candidates who can maintain a consistent teaching schedule and commit to working with students for at least 12 months are strongly preferred.

Job Type: Fixed term contract

Pay: $30.00-$45.00 per hour
