– Care Assistant (Dementia & Companionship Care)
Position: Care Assistant
Reports To: Nurse Supervisor / Care Coordinator
Employment Type: Casual / Part-Time / Flexible Hours
Compensation: Competitive hourly wage (based on experience and training)

As a Care Assistant, you will play a key role in providing compassionate, relationship-centered care to clients—particularly those experiencing memory loss, confusion, or changes in behavior. This role places a strong emphasis on companionship, emotional support, and creating a sense of safety, comfort, and connection.
You will work one-on-one with clients to provide personal care, meaningful engagement, and gentle guidance through daily routines. You will also work closely with our care team to share observations and adapt care approaches that best support each client’s abilities, preferences, and changing needs.
This role is ideal for someone who is patient, empathetic, and experienced in dementia care, and who understands the importance of connection, communication, and dignity in caregiving.
Key Responsibilities1. Dementia-Specific & Person-Centered Care
- Provide supportive care to clients living with dementia, cognitive impairment, or memory loss.
- Use person-centered approaches to reduce anxiety, confusion, and responsive behaviors.
- Support orientation, familiarity, and comfort through consistent routines and gentle guidance.
- Adapt communication strategies to meet clients where they are cognitively and emotionally.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in mood, behavior, or cognition.
2. Companionship & Meaningful Engagement
- Build genuine,
trusting relationships with clients through presence, patience, and empathy.
- Engage clients in meaningful activities (conversation, music, walks, hobbies, reminiscence).
- Support social connection and reduce loneliness and isolation.
- Create a calm, reassuring environment that promotes emotional well-being.
- Encourage participation in daily routines while respecting the client’s pace and preferences.
3. Personal & Supportive Care
- Assist with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility).
- Support safe movement and transfers using appropriate techniques.
- Promote independence while ensuring dignity, comfort, and safety.
4. Restorative & Daily Living Support
- Encourage gentle movement and participation in daily activities to maintain function.
- Support routines that enhance confidence, familiarity, and stability.
- Adapt activities based on cognitive and physical ability.
5. Health Observation & Reporting
- Observe and report changes in cognition, mood, behavior, or physical condition.
- Recognize early signs of delirium, decline, or distress and communicate promptly.
- Document care provided and share insights with the care team to support care planning.
6. Nutrition & Hydration Support
- Assist with meal preparation and encourage regular eating and drinking.
- Support clients who may need cueing, prompting, or supervision during meals.
7. Home Safety & Environment
- Maintain a safe, calm, and structured home environment.
- Identify and reduce risks that may contribute to confusion or falls.
- Perform light housekeeping related to client care.
8. Medication Assistance (if trained and delegated)
- Provide reminders or assist with self-administration as outlined in the care plan.
- Observe for side effects or concerns and report to supervising nurse.
Supervision & Accountability
- Work within scope of training and demonstrated competence.
- Follow care plans and guidance from RN/LPN supervisors.
- Report any changes in client condition, safety concerns, or uncertainties immediately.
Qualifications & Experience
Required / Preferred:
- Health Care Aide (HCA) certificate preferred
- Experience working with clients with dementia or cognitive impairment (strongly preferred)
- Current CPR & First Aid
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
- Reliable transportation (asset)
