Your opportunity:

Residing in the Office of the Vice Dean, Medical Education, the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) is dedicated to working with and supporting learners from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate medical education (MD and MD/PhD), Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Radiation Sciences, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology and Physical Therapy programs to optimize the learning environment and experience at individual and systems levels, and enable learners’ development into health care professionals.

As the Lead Career Counsellor, you will provide individual and group career counselling services to Undergraduate and Graduate health professions learners across all three UofT campuses, who are diverse in age, culture, race, gender, sexual identity, and educational background.You will develop career programming and resources and establish collaborative networks with University of Toronto and external career development/counselling agencies to ensure that learners are well positioned through the continuum of medical education and into working professionals. As the Lead, you will direct the activities of a small group of staff and be a key contributor to developing and implementing new programs and initiatives. Utilizing your strong advising, problem solving, and leadership skills, you will help advance the mission and vision of OLA.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Advising students on career-related matters (i.e. career planning, interview skills, developing goals, work search, program transfer etc.) by providing options and consequences and incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success;
- Guiding individuals through the career exploration,



planning and goal-setting process by facilitating self-assessment exercises, and applying non-directive and client-centered career counselling techniques to support informed career decision-making
- Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
- Screening and making referrals to academic advising and learning skills programs and other resources or services for students in distress; Responding to escalated complaints using informal negotiation skills
- Developing and implementing new programs and initiatives independently, including developing content for instructional workshops and facilitating educational workshops and seminars; Developing plans that support and enhance career services program visibility
- Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and learning outcomes to inform program planning activities; Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives
- Keeping well informed on labour market, occupational and educational work trends and theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion
- Directing the activities of a small group in a limited area and providing feedback on performance

Essential Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in counselling or equivalent education and experience, related to career development and advising
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience providing career advising services to learners within an academic institution.
- Demonstrated understanding of case management and referral best practices
- Demonstrated experience in career counselling, development, and/or advising on an individual or group basis
- Experience directing work activities for a group of employees and providing feedback on performance
- Knowledge of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and its community partners, including application of its policies and procedures




- Experience and aptitude for designing and creating high- quality career related resources in a range of formats
- Experience providing document review support, such as Cover Letters, Resumes, CV’s, Personal Statements, and Professional Social Media (i.e. LinkedIn)
- Experience building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including external career development/counselling agencies
- Experience designing and delivering relevant instructional/educational workshops and seminars to various audiences
- Demonstrated experience directing the activities of staff and providing feedback
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing evaluation frameworks for programs
- Demonstrated proficiency in analyzing complex statistical reports and/orfinancial information
- Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite
- Excellent (oral and written) communication and interpersonal skills; Strong analytical skills
- Demonstrated skill/aptitude in cross-cultural communication and inter-professional group facilitation
- Tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to adapt to change quickly
- Self-directed with ability to work independently and set priorities in an environment with peak service periods, deadlines and varying schedule demands
- Demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic setting
- Tact, discretion, sensitivity to confidential matters
- Ability and willingness to work across all UofT campuses

USW Pay Band 15 -- $97,348. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $124,491. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
