The Parkland School Division currently has a Full-time (1.0 FTE) Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Ecole Meridian Heights School in Stony Plain, Alberta.

This position will remain open until a qualified applicant is hired; therefore, if interested in the position, please apply as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will be reporting to the Principal and under the general supervision of a Teacher: Provides medical support and assistance to students who have physical disabilities, often presenting in combination with cognitive disabilities. Monitors and documents student health, assisting with the daily care & physical needs of the students. Consults with teachers and parents to assist with ongoing physical health of the student(s).

This specific assignment within Student Services involves supporting a medically fragile student entering Grade 1 who requires continuous monitoring and complex medical support by an LPN. In addition to following the student care plans, the LPN is an integral part of the school team and is expected to support the educational programming for the student, as well as provide general classroom support as needed. The successful candidate must be comfortable working independently.

- Performs basic nursing care procedures.
- Manages daily tracheostomy care, including tracheal suctioning and total protection of the student's airway.
- Administers pediatric G-tube feedings using automated pumps, gravity feeds, and syringes.
- Executes ordered clinical interventions in a medical emergency (including equipment troubleshooting, manual bagging, and administration of emergency oxygen or Ventolin) while remaining continuously with the student.
- Administering medications

- Performs/assists student(s) with physical requirements and activities of daily living:





- Assists the student with physical tasks, lifting, transfers, and specialized toileting needs throughout the day.
- Supports students through an inclusion-focused approach within diverse educational settings.

- Assists and educates staff regarding medical conditions to ensure awareness among all stakeholders:

- Implements student emergency response as required.
- Shares professional expertise with the multi-disciplinary team to safely bridge medical safety boundaries with daily school programming.

- Evaluates, observes, reports, and documents changes in student(s) medical status and deviation from anticipated response:

- Adheres strictly to the professional division standard that all care, assessments, device settings, fluid intake, and timelines must be recorded.
- Works collaboratively with the school team and family to ensure adherence to the student's medical care plans.

- General classroom support:

- Provides learning support to the student and classroom peers as required.
- Other school duties as determined by the classroom teacher and/or principal.

Physical Demands

- This position requires a high level of skill in assisting student(s) with severe disabilities, and a significant level of physical and emotional stamina.
- Moderately heavy physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis (e.g., transfer to/from a wheelchair and commode or providing support in ambulation).
- Frequently required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.
- Must be able to lift and/or move (with assistance if required) students who weigh over 50 lb.

Communications and Responsibility

- The focus of this position is to provide extensive personal and physical assistance to students who have physical disabilities, often presenting in combination with cognitive disabilities.
- Regular and consistent communication with families and professional staff regarding medical care is required. Built on Division values, the LPN must proactively establish healthy, clear boundaries and maintain collaborative relationships with the student's family and the school team.
- Direction from teachers and the principal will be provided. The LPN must successfully balance the teacher's authority as the educational lead of the classroom while maintaining independent, autonomous clinical accountability for the medical safety of the child.

Equivalencies will be considered. Knowledge &

- Skills

- Licensure & Education: Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) holding current registration in good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Ongoing participation in courses, seminars, and specialized training related to complex pediatric care is expected.

- Clinical Knowledge: Proven expertise in tracheal suctioning, ventilator management, continuous respiratory assessments, and pediatric G-tube operations. Experience supporting children with complex medical/cognitive disorders is a highly valued asset.

- Educational Integration &
- Alternate Communication: Knowledge of or willingness to become proficient in the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, assistive technology, visual aids, sign language, and picture exchange communication (PECS) to actively facilitate the student's non-verbal communication.
- Core Competencies: Requires high levels of Communication, Interpersonal skills, Medical assessment skills, Problem solving, Teamwork, Client services skills, and Planning.

This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.

This position is covered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement Hours of Work: 35 hours/week (Monday to Friday) Pay Rate: $38.72-$43.26/hour (Pay Group 7)
