We are looking for a Full-Time Maintenance Assistant with a minimum of 5 years of direct, hands-on-experience working in a facilities or commercial/industrial maintenance workplace to become a vital part of our team! We are the first line of emergency food support for people facing crisis serving over 200,000 Emergency Food Hampers to our community last year.

The Chance
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Assistant ensures our buildings and equipment operate efficiently and safely. This position requires practical experience maintaining buildings, equipment, systems and facilities. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a professional facilities setting, identifying maintenance issues, performing repairs and preventative maintenance, guiding external contractors when needed, and working safely and efficiently with minimal supervision.
What You’ll Do:
- Diagnosing mechanical issues and correcting them.
- Completing minor repair work, which includes repairing doors, locks, door frames, and handles as well as replacing light bulbs, sockets, and switches.
- Performing basic plumbing tasks, which include unclogging drains as well as fixing leaking faucets and toilets.
- Basic inspection:
control panels and electrical wiring to detect any issues that require immediate attention.
- Taking inventory of maintenance supplies and notifying the manager of low or depleted supplies.
- Promptly responding to requests for emergency repairs and clean ups.
- Ensuring that all maintenance equipment is in good working order.
- Replacing bulbs and ballasts in fight fixtures to repair leaking sinks and toilets, complete minor repairs to various equipment and facilities to ensure ongoing operations of a facility. This responsibility also includes inspecting equipment and systems for preventative maintenance reasons.
- Move furniture and equipment as directed. The ability needed to perform these tasks by using hand trucks, forklifts, and other tools and to follow safety guidelines pertaining to lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects.
- Maintain accurate and up to date records about repairs and cleaning schedules. Will also be responsible for maintaining inventory of necessary parts, cleaning supplies and other materials needed to perform their job duties.
- Perform basic maintenance and repairs to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, refrigeration, and carpentry.
- Perform other duties as required.
What You Bring:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma required and relevant post secondary education.
- Minimum of 5 years of direct, hands-on-experience working in a facilities or commercial/industrial maintenance environment
- Trades experience (or certification) in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical would be an asset.
- Training through BOMA is considered an asset.
- Experience with precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Professional presentation and attitude.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal skills and proficient in the English language.
- Demonstrated hands-on ability for repairs, preventative maintenance, and general facility upkeep using common tools such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches.
- Strong practical maintenance skills including the ability to troubleshoot issues, perform basic repairs and work with building systems and equipment.
- Ability to take apart machines, equipment or devices to remove and replace defective parts.
- Ability to check blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogues as necessary.
- Able to work both independently and in teams,
- Ability to make recommendations that will impact efficiency and help to reduce operating costs.
- Excellent knowledge of safety principles and practices required. Ability to adhere to OH&S; legislation is mandatory.
- Knowledge of Microsoft 365 is required (SharePoint, Word, Excel)
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Working conditions are normal for an office and warehouse environment. You must be able to be on your feet for the majority of the day and be able to lift up to 50lbs.
