Position Summary

Steelcon is hiring a Material Handler (Crane & Rigging Support) with rigging experience, specifically related to building joists, to support steel fabrication and manufacturing operations. This role plays a critical part in material handling, crane-assisted lifting, and jig work, ensuring steel components are safely secured, moved, positioned, and staged throughout the production process. The successful candidate will work closely with crane operators and production teams to maintain safe and efficient workflow within the plant.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Inspect and prepare loads for lifting using proper rigging techniques
- Attach and secure steel joists, bundles, and fabricated components using slings, chains, shackles, and lifting devices
- Perform jig work, including positioning, aligning, and securing steel components during fabrication and assembly processes
- Communicate with crane operators using hand signals or radios to coordinate lifting and material movement
- Ensure load stability and balance during lifting operations
- Handle and stage materials to support production schedules and workflow requirements
- Perform daily inspections of rigging equipment and report defects or safety concerns




- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations
- Assist with general plant and production duties as required

Qualifications

- Previous experience in rigging within a structural steel fabrication, joist manufacturing, or construction environment
- Experience rigging and handling building joists is required
- Knowledge of rigging hardware, lifting equipment, load calculations, and protected lifting practices
- Experience performing jig work and working with steel assemblies in a manufacturing environment is considered a strong asset
- Ability to read and interpret lift plans, production drawings, and shop drawings
- Strong understanding of workplace safety standards and safe rigging procedures
- Physically capable of lifting, climbing, and working at heights
- Rigging or hoisting certification preferred
- Valid Working at Heights certification

Location, Shift, Hours of Work & Working Conditions

- Location: Welland
- Shift & Hours: Day Shift: Monday to Thursday - 5:30 am to 5:15 pm and Afternoon Shift: Monday to Thursday - 5:30 pm to 5:15 am
- May be required to work additional hours based on plant needs
- Manufacturing floor environment with exposure to heat, noise, dust, and industrial equipment.
- Requires standing, lifting, and walking throughout the shift.
