Join Our Team at Sureway Metals as a Mechanical Designer/Engineer!

Sureway Metals has been shaping steel solutions since 1970. We’re leaders in fabrication and manufacturing, known for innovation, precision, and delivering high-quality products across Canada.

We’re growing our design team and are seeking a detail-driven Mechanical Designer with strong Solidworks expertise to join us. This role is focused on practical, buildable engineering—turning concepts into fabrication-ready designs that perform in demanding industrial and construction environments.

This is not theoretical design work. You will work closely with the shop floor, fabrication teams, and project stakeholders to ensure designs are clear, efficient to build, and aligned with production realities.

Key Responsibilities:

Design & Engineering

- Design steel concrete forms, structural frames, and custom fabrication assemblies using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Develop detailed 3D models, fabrication drawings, and shop-ready packages
- Ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with fabrication processes
- Select materials, plate thicknesses, and structural members based on load requirements and cost efficiency
- Apply engineering principles to ensure structural integrity under concrete loads and handling conditions

Analysis & Validation

- Perform basic engineering calculations and FEA to validate structural performance
- Evaluate load paths, deflection, and stress for large welded assemblies
- Ensure designs meet project requirements for strength, rigidity, and durability

Shop & Production Support

- Work closely with fabrication teams to resolve fit-up issues and clarify drawings
- Support production during builds, including troubleshooting and design adjustments
- Incorporate shop feedback into future designs to improve efficiency and reduce rework
- Ensure drawings reflect correct revision control and are clearly understood on the floor

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

- Participate in design reviews and contribute to improving engineering processes
- Help standardize components, drawing practices, and workflows where applicable
- Support project coordination between engineering, production, and management

Safety & Quality

- Ensure designs meet applicable safety standards and company requirements
- Promote safe, practical solutions in both design and fabrication
- Maintain high-quality drawing standards and documentation practices

Qualifications & Requirements

- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 2–5 years of experience in mechanical design or steel fabrication
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Experience with welded structures, structural steel, or heavy equipment design
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes (cutting, welding, assembly)
- Ability to create clear, detailed, shop-ready drawings
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-driven environment

Preferred Experience

- Experience designing concrete forms or similar heavy structural systems
- Familiarity with structural codes (AISC, CSA, or similar)
- Experience with FEA tools for structural validation
- Hands-on exposure to shop environments or field installations

What This Role Really Requires

- Ownership of designs from concept to fabrication
- Ability to handle ambiguity—most designs are custom, not standardized
- Strong communication with shop personnel and project stakeholders
- Focus on practical, buildable solutions—not over-engineered concepts

Why Join Sureway:

At Sureway Metals, we offer competitive pay, benefits, and opportunities for growth in an workplace that values practical problem-solving, accountability, and continuous improvement.

If you are a Mechanical Designer who enjoys hands-on engineering and seeing your designs come to life on the shop floor, we encourage you to apply.
