Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist, the OTA/PTA provides clinical and technical support across BIRT services and Clinical Seating programs. The role supports the implementation of treatment plans, equipment management, client and family education, therapeutic equipment maintenance, and safe, effective service delivery. The incumbent works collaboratively with clients, families, the interdisciplinary team, vendors, and external partners to promote optimal participation, mobility, safety, and functional outcomes.

Key Responsibilities





- Document client care, treatment activities, equipment interventions, maintenance activities, and workload statistics in accordance with organizational and Ministry of Health requirements.
- Communicate effectively with clients, families, members of the interdisciplinary team, external agencies, and vendors.
- Maintain treatment spaces and equipment to ensure cleanliness, safety, and adequate stock levels.
- Practice in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety standards, and professional guidelines.
- Support family-centered care by respecting client and family rights, values, beliefs, experiences, and participation in care planning and decision-making.
- Shares new knowledge and best practices with colleagues, students and other professionals within the organization, professional body and community

BIRT Clinical

- Administer treatment programs developed by the Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist for individual clients and groups, including strengthening, range of motion, gait training, balance, mobility, endurance, hydrotherapy, and other therapeutic interventions.
- Maintain communication with supervising therapists, monitor client responses to treatment, and report any changes or adverse reactions.
- Apply, monitor, fabricate, modify, and repair splints, orthoses, adaptive aids, and assistive devices as directed.
- Set up and provide instruction to clients, families, staff, and students on the safe use of therapeutic and mobility equipment, including wheelchairs, trikes, bicycles, walkers, and other assistive devices.
- Assist clients with transfers, mobility activities, activities of daily living, and positioning as required.
- Prepare, apply, and monitor therapeutic modalities as directed,



including cold packs, contrast baths, ultrasound, TENS, and muscle stimulation.

Clinical Seating

- Collaborate with seating clinicians to ensure clients have safe, functional, and appropriate seating systems throughout their inpatient stay.
- Assist with wheelchair and seating system setup, adjustments, cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Deliver equipment training programs developed by Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, including power wheelchair training.
- Manage the seating and mobility equipment pool and liaise with vendors regarding equipment acquisition, maintenance, repair, and replacement.
- Monitor inventory and availability of supplies and equipment required to support clinical seating services.
- Conduct or assist with annual safety inspections of seating and mobility equipment and coordinate repairs and replacements as required.
- Support therapeutic equipment loan processes and ensure loaned equipment is clean, safe, and in good working condition.
- Participate in the development, review, and continuous improvement of maintenance processes, procedures, and quality assurance activities.
- Assist with equipment procurement and ordering of supplies as requested.

Qualifications

- Graduate of an accredited Canadian Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) program.
- Paediatric rehabilitation experience preferred.
- Experience with clinical seating, mobility equipment, therapeutic equipment maintenance, or repair is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, manage competing demands, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under the direction of an Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist.
- Strong initiative, problem-solving skills, and commitment to equipment safety, maintenance, and quality improvement.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with clients, families, team members, vendors, and community partners.
