St. John's

At Avalon Holographics, we’re developing technology that helps people understand complex systems and solve real-world problems.

We’re building advanced holographic visualization systems that combine optics, hardware, and software to enable shared, real-time 3D understanding of complex data supporting digital twin environments, simulation, collaboration, and real-time decision-making across industries such as healthcare and defense.

We’re always interested in connecting with talented Optics Designers to help develop the optical systems at the heart of our holographic displays. You’ll work on custom optical designs, simulations, component selection, calibration, and hands-on testing, collaborating with technical teams to improve display performance and bring new designs to life.

If you enjoy solving complex optical challenges, experimenting with new approaches, and working hands-on to turn ideas into real systems, we’d love to hear from you!

What You’ll Do

- Design and develop optical systems and custom lens solutions for Avalon’s holographic displays.
- Model and simulate optical performance using ray-tracing and optical design tools.
- Work hands-on in the lab to build, align, calibrate, test, and refine optical systems.
- Analyze test and simulation results to identify issues and improve system performance.
- Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering on opto-mechanical design, component integration, alignment, and assembly.
- Work across technical teams to integrate optical designs into the overall system.
- Develop software tools and scripts for calibration, automated testing, simulation, and data analysis.
- Evaluate and select optical components based on performance and system requirements.
- Document designs, test results, and technical findings to support ongoing development.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, Photonics, or a related field.

A Master’s or PhD is an asset.
- Strong foundation in optics and optical system design, including lens design, ray tracing, and optical components.
- Hands-on experience building, aligning, testing, or characterizing optical systems.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, and/or C++ for analysis, modelling, calibration, or automated testing.
- Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working through complex technical challenges.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering disciplines.
- Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable working in an environment where designs and priorities evolve as new information becomes available .

Nice to Have

- Experience working with Zemax OpticStudio, FRED, TracePro, or similar optical design and ray-tracing tools.
- Experience with opto-mechanical design and optical tolerancing.
- Experience developing calibration or automated optical test systems.
- Experience taking optical systems from prototype through integration, validation, or production.
- Experience with display, imaging, projection, or other complex optical systems.
